Big picspam ahead - not very dialup friendly (sorry).
There have been some great TV cars over the years. The General Lee on Dukes Of Hazard and Kitt on Knight Rider instantly come to mind. But few have held the passion and admiration over a fandom quite like the car driven by the Winchester Brothers on Supernatural.
Why the Metallicar is one of the best cars to ever be seen (and loved) on TV
1. It's a classic American car
Supernatural would not be the great show it is with the brothers driving a modern car. No minivans, sedans or sleek looking sports cars for these guys. The 1967 Chevy Impala is a great muscle car. Check out all that metal and chrome. They don't make cars like this anymore. And do you seriously believe any of the Winchester men could have survived that crash at the end of Season One if they'd been riding in a little Honda? That car saved them, no question.
2. It has its own "character"
This car sounds like no other. It practically growls to life everytime Dean or Sam start the ingnition. It has very distinctive sounds, from the engine to the door squeaks.
3. It's been a constant companion & "home"
Everything the brothers own is safely stowed inside the Impala. Outside of the motel rooms they stay in, their home is the car. The Impala is practically a member of their family - she's been around all their lives. Metallicar is not only reliable transportation, but a place to sit in comfort while staking out places.
4. Dean loves the Impala
Dean loves his brother and would readily die for him, but he loves his car almost as much. Dean hated knowing the shapeshifter that looked like him in Skin had driven the car and he worried about Sam ruining the upholstry in Nightmare. In Simon Said he ended up giving her away to Andy because of his mind control powers, but Dean apologized to her later. Sam can drive the car occasionally, but it's Dean's baby all the way.
5. Jensen loves the Impala
If there is any doubt about this one, just watch two videos. First is a short promo interview done on the WB back when the show was about to premiere. Jensen says "Ohhhhh, my Impala.", then goes on to talk about it in loving detail. And in the Paley Festival video one of the questions was what type of car they used. Jensen answered with pride "It's a 1967 Chevy Impala."
6. Eric Kripke loves the Impala
After the car was brutally smashed by the demon-driven semi-truck in Devil's Trap, fans worried the Metallicar would be no more. But in an online interview, Kripke said he loves the car and would make sure it would return. He understands how much the fans have grown to love the car. This was illustrated beautifully with the sequence in "Bloodlust" with "Back In Black" playing, the camera shooting loving shots of the car from all angles, and the boys enjoying being back on the road in style.
Dean: Whoo! Listen to her purr! You ever heard anything so sweet?
Sam: You know if you two wanna get a room just let me know, Dean.
Dean: Awww. Don't listen to him baby. He doesn't understand us.
7. The fans love the Impala
When the Impala gave her all in Devil's Trap, many fans were more concerned about her survival than the Winchester men inside. The fans have truly fallen in love with this car, with fanfic and wallpapers showing their devotion. The fans even gave the car it's name of Metallicar.
8. The car has a cool name and its own theme song
The Impala was dubbed the Metallicar by the fans because of Dean's love of classic rock. And yes, the car has a theme song. I think that was made pretty clear by the use of AC/DC's "Back In Black" twice now - during the Pilot when we first saw the Impala tear out of that gas station and then after it was all repaired and back on the road in Bloodlust.
9. The Impala is the third character of the show
There are clearly three characters on Supernatural: Dean, Sam, and the Impala. Even when we don't see her tearing down a country backroad, she's always around. We see her parked on the street while the boys are inside investigating, she hides under the trees at a cemetary, she blends in with the darkness of night, but somehow she's always there, making her presence known.
10. The Impala is a reflection of Dean
While Dean loves his car, she is often the first one to be neglected when he's suffering some physical or emotional trauma. The car was all shiny and clean during most of Season One, until near the end when the Winchesters were hot on the trail of the Demon. Then in Everybody Loves A Clown we saw her as a broken shell with no engine, echoing Dean's emptiness over John's death. At the end of the episode, the Impala was subjected to a brutal assault as Dean's anger and grief caused him to lash out at her metal frame with a crowbar. But by Bloodlust, she was totally restored and looking better than ever. Dean however, try as he might to hide it deep inside, is still not himself. Now the car is just another layer of the mask he wears to hide the pain he's been carrying since John's death.
And now...just to show that Metallicar isn't the first Impala I've loved, I thought I'd show you a few photos of an old friend that is sadly long gone.
This was my dad's 1964 Chevy Impala when it was brand new. Of course, I didn't get to know this beauty until much later, but it was a great looking car even then. I have many fond memories of riding in this car on vacations trips with my parents and even on short shopping trips. It was long and lean and had a nice heavy feel about it. I remember all the chrome everywhere and I always admired the pretty Impala emblem on the sides and on the steering wheel.
We sadly had to sell our Impala many years ago when the front seat wore out and the springs started to come through the deteriorating fabric. It was sad to see the car go then and now I miss it even more. Oh, if I only had that car to drive now.
My thanks to jensenacklesfans.com ,Supernatural Media, and extreme_graphix for the lovely photos of Metallicar.
