I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.
In which episode did Dean first kick in a door?
How many episodes has Sam been the coffee boy?
In which episodes can you see a crew member or the camera?
When do Jared & Jensen do their own stunts and when do we see their stunt doubles?
You'll learn the answers to these questions and many more.
I'll be examining each episode in order, one at a time. Some of the info. will probably be well known to most of you, but I hope to point out some new discoveries as well.
All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D
Beware! This post is very image heavy.
Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?: The Mad Cow newspaper article is "By Christopher Cooper". This is the Prop Master for SPN.
This episode is co-written by Rachel Nave. Rachel Nave was mentioned as Sam's prom date that Dean stole in WIAWSNB.
Location, location: The "Oklahoma Gas & Power Co." building is actually the studio they film at in Burnaby.
The Canadian Motion Picture Park Studio.
In the Gas/Power building shot: Dean gets out of the car and pats the trunk of the Impala as he walks past. Awww....
Continuity Error: This is kind of a weak break in continuity, if it is one, because it's really hard to tell how far they drive in the neighborhood to get to the sink hole. The wide shot of the Impala driving up to the sinkhole has cars/trucks on either side of the street, but the next side shot of the Impala shows no other vehicles close by.
Beetle scene in the car: Weird "plastic wrap" on Sam's passenger side window...
but none on Dean's window.
Continuity Error: We go from bright sunshine with Sam and Dean at the sinkhole to a rain splattered Impala and rain-soaked roads as they park for the BBQ.
Car scene before they squat in the empty house: Sam's driving and the weird "plastic wrap" is again on the window, this time the driver's side.
Continuity Error: Same car shot - In the interior shots the driver's side window is up (see cap above) but as they pull up to the house, the window is down.
Sam even leans out the open window to ask, "We're gonna squat in an empty house?".
Most of the time the CGI and effects work on the show is excellent, but they kind of dropped the ball on this episode. Check out the fuzzy spiders in the shower scene.
Then for the shot of the spiders on the actress's face, they look a lot smaller than the ones seen in the shower.
I can see you: After the woman is attacked by the spiders and falls out of the shower you can see a reflection of the camera as it pans down in a piece of the broken glass that's still on the shower door. It's really hard to see this just in caps. I suggest checking out the video of the episode to see it properly.
As the two approach the crime scene of the realtor to speak to Larry, you can see Jensen & Jared's marks on the ground.
The first and so far only appearance of the boys with umbrellas.
As they climb the fence to get into the realtor's house you can see Jensen's stunt double.
That's the stunt double again.
However, this looks like Jared to me.
Perhaps the worst shot of the spiders from the shower scene is when Dean picks up the towel and shakes the supposedly dead spiders onto the floor. Nice plastic spiders!
As Dean pulls the Impala over to watch Matt as he gets off the school bus, there's an odd shadow on the ground. It looks like a big screen set up behind the camera/crew.
Continuity Error: In the forest scene with Matt he has a container for bugs in his hand and then reaches down with the same hand to pick up his bag, seemingly without putting down the container.
Dean checks out the girl in the furry boots as they pull up to the college campus.
Maybe she's following the boys, because look who can be seen behind them a few moments later?
Continuity Error: Just before the bees come through the chimney Dean/Jensen has no mark on his forehead, but afterwards he does. Then it's gone again once they're upstairs. One of those bees stung him on the face, ouch!
There might be a slight mark on his head here, kinda hard to tell.
Nothing here though.
In the next 3 caps you can see the mark on his forehead.
In this shot after they're upstairs, however, it's gone.
Dean doesn't use his usual lighter to ignite the bug spray, but a gas match lighter.
Of course, the biggest continuity error of the episode occurs when sunrise seems to occur less than an hour after midnight.
In the last scene as Sam and Matt talk you can see Dean help Larry put a box in the moving van. He's so helpful! And I don't know if this would really qualify as a continuity error (it's a little questionable) but in the next shot Dean is suddenly leaning against the Impala.
Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at Bugs.
