SPN Revealed S2 - 2.10 Hunted

Yes! Only a week has gone by and I'm already posting for the next episode. Amazing, huh? ;) It only makes sense considering "Croatoan" and "Hunted" sort of go together (one being the continuation of the other).

Think you know every SPN episode inside and out? So did I, but a new HDTV with a great picture and sound changed all that. I started to see things that I'd never noticed before. After a while I decided to make a list of all the things big and small that I came across, episode by episode.

I'd like to think of this as an in-depth look into Supernatural. It's a collection of interesting observations, continuity errors, goofs, filmmaking techniques, statistics, important (or not so important) information, trivia, and anything else that struck me as unusual.

Beware! This post is image heavy.

A few important notes...

Over the run of the S1 SPN Revealed posts, I was asked how I'm so good at spotting continuity errors and other little happenings in the episodes. The simple answer is that I've worked as a Script Supervisor (also known as Continuity in England) in the past. I only worked on a few college student and independent films, but I know the job well. The Script Supervisor does a lot, but the basic job description is to keep track of continuity during filming, everything from hair & make-up, to props and lighting. On the set, you have to catch everything you can - quickly. The difference with doing this to SPN episodes is that I can take my time, back up the video countless times, and even look frame by frame.

I don't hunt down these instances to be critical of the SPN crew. I know even from my limited experience how hard they work every week and I have the utmost respect for them. But it's interesting what little mistakes get by even a professional crew. It's also interesting to continue to find new elements to these episodes that many of us have seen dozens of times.

Get Involved: I'm always open to continuity errors, etc. spotted by others. If you see something that I don't have in a post, drop me a comment in the post or a PM, and I'll look into it. If I can confirm it and include it in that episode's post, I'll give you credit for the find.

For this reason, these posts will occasionally be updated. I'll post about the changes when they occur.

All the caps in these posts are my own. While most of these will not be suitable for other uses, due to my cropping and highlighting, you're free to take any that you like. All I ask is that you give me credit for them. Thanks! :D

~~~ 2.10 "Hunted" ~~~
We begin with the biggest continuity error of the episode, or I should say between this episode and "Croatoan"...the scene by the water between Sam & Dean. This is due to them filming the scenes on totally different days, of course. The scene in "Croatoan" is in sunshine.
The one in "Hunted" is on an overcast day.
Sam from "Croatoan".
Sam from "Hunted".
Dean from "Croatoan". Note that his jacket collar is down.
Dean from "Hunted" with the jacket collar up.
One would think when Sam's sneaking away from the motel that he's leaving the motel room, but the door he goes out of says Laundry.
For a parking lot that's "Patrolled 24 hours" Sam is able to break into a car and steal it easily.
The boys are staying at The Velvet Inn.
The run down house at 5637 has a "House for sale by owner" sign with the phone number 555-0153.
Nice breaking of the 4th wall when some blood splatters on the camera lens as Sam is blown up in Ava's dream.
We find out Ash has a tattoo.
Another continuity error with Sam's beer in this scene at the Roadhouse. While talking to Ellen & Ash, Sam drinks from the glass several times, leaving it at this low level.
However, after he gets up and Ash is about to drink what's left in the glass, the level of the beer has magically gone up.
More trouble with continuity in this scene as Sam walks to his motel room. We see him (actually it's probably Jared's stand-in/double) walking across the parking lot with his hands in his jacket pockets.
And again in this shot, still with hands in his pockets.
But in the very next shot, his hands are out.
What kind of a motel has a case full of dishes on display in the room?
This article shows the reporter as Jason Fischer, who is actually the show's Production Coordinator.
When Dean pulls up in the Impala opposite Sam's motel room, you see him put the car in Park, but he doesn't turn the key to turn the engine off, even though you hear the engine stop.
In the frames just before Dean first kicks Gordon, pretty sure that's not Sterling but a stunt double.
And in this shot it looks like Jensen's stunt double, Todd.
Continuity error with the written down address. When Sam writes it down it looks like this...
but looks like this when he's approaching the house. Note that the "5" is especially different.
Ava's license plate: Illinois R2S 3267.
The 2 explosions were shot differently. The first one looks like it was done practically (live on the set) and we see it in two shots. Since it was small, Jensen was able to be right there.
In contrast, the 2nd, larger explosion looks like it was done with CGI and shot on green screen (there's also production photos to back this up). You can tell because Jensen has a cloudy/faded look compared to during the first explosion.
When Sam unties Dean it looks like the ropes are just wrapped around the arms of the chair and not tied at all.
When the boys are running away from Gordon it looks like Jensen falls behind that log (or falls into the ditch...whatever it is).
Make-up Continuity Error: In the house Sam is clearly bleeding from 3 places on his face - his nose and possibly 2 cuts.
By the time they're outside, you can't see the blood from his nose any longer, though he could've wiped that off before they walked out the door.
The two cuts are still there and bleeding though.
However, in the following car scene Sam's face is completely blemish free.
But in the final scene when they find Ava's dead fiancee, there's not only a stain/bruise under Sam's nose but a cut on his cheek.
Jensen's sporting a bandaid on his left hand just like he did for a few shots in the previous ep, "Croatoan".
Hope you enjoyed this revealing look at "Hunted".
