First Impressions: 10x04 "Paper Moon"

Another season, another stab at writing short tediously long, but entertaining reviews (I hope).

With Dean cured of being a demon and the boys reunited, it's time to get back to a good old MOTW episode. :)
On a side note: Yay! I don't have to deal with any boring angel stuff.

While "Bitten" was not a favorite episode of mine, I'm glad they revisited Kate in this episode.

"Werewolves of London" song! Excellent!!!!
And this ep takes place in my home state of Washington. Woot! :D
Durham, Washington actually exists! It used to be an old mining town...and I've actually been past this place.

Anyway, onto the show. Biker dude gets killed by a female werewolf. Roll credits.

The boys are taking some time off, drinking beers, wearing sunglasses, and relaxing by a lake. And, yes this is the same lake where Jared did the ALS ice bucket Challenge.

Dean: Hey, something I needed to ask you.
Sam: Shoot.
Dean: You've been kicked, bit, scratched, stabbed, possessed, killed...and you sprain your friggin' elbow?
Sam: Dude, it was more than a sprain. All right? And it was a friggin' demon, but -
Dean: But what? That sling come with a slice of crybaby pie on the side? Please. (they both chuckle)

Sam then asks how Dean is doing and he says "golden". He's enjoying the "we-time" with his brother. Then Dean mentions about 3 kills in a town and instead of loaning out the job to some other hunters, Dean says he's ready to go back to work. Sam warns that Dean needs to let him know if things go sideways at all and Dean does.

Ok, so the boys are posing as Game Wardens. Cool. Love the uniforms. :)
King County. Hee! Sorry, but it's like writer Adam Glass set this episode in my own backyard. It's kinda cool.

But this sheriff...what is with the weird accent??? It's part southern and part Canadian. Really strange.
Hee! Awkward boys are awkward. "Bitcoin...Obama." LOL Dean what are you doing? :P

So the boys go question the unreliable witness, who finally confesses he saw the supposedly dead girl again after the attack, claiming she was a ghost. The boys suspect the girl is a werewolf and go check out the old farm where the ghost spotting happened.

I forgot to mention it before in the lake scenes but...Baby's back!!!! Nice to see her back all shiny again. :D

Sam: Guess she likes bad boys.
Dean: Well, wait'll she gets a load of us.

Oh, yeah! *g*
The boys find some dead chickens...and a girl on her phone who turns out to be Kate, the werewolf they let go in "Bitten". They tie her up and question her and she basically confesses, ready to die just like that. Dean's all ready to shoot her, but Sam stops him and they go talk about it.

Sam: You know what? Let me do it.
Dean: Why?
Sam: Because, I think you should sit this one out.
Dean: What are you talking about?
Sam: You're not ready, Dean.

I guess Sam's worried about the Mark taking Dean over again, so he doesn't want him killing anyone anytime soon. Not sure how long he'll be able to keep that up.

Sam gets a call from the sheriff...there's been another killing across town, less than an hour ago, so Kate couldn't have done the killing. Meanwhile, Kate cuts the rope and escapes. Dean wisely grabbed her phone which leads the boys to the Lincoln Motel.

Time for some brotherly chatting in the car! *loves*

Dean: So what's this about me not being ready back there?
Sam: I'm - I wasn't trying to start something, Dean. I was just saying, I thought that was the whole point of us taking a break, you know?
Dean: Oh, no. No, yeah. I get that. And you know, there's no worries there. But I gotta ask. What about you?
Sam: What about me, what?
Dean: Are you ready?
Sam: Why wouldn't I be ready?
Dean: Lester.
Sam: Lester? You're serious? This is about Lester?
Dean: Um, don't get me wrong. I'm not - I'm not trying to start anything either, okay? I'm just saying, maybe...maybe we oughta talk about that.
Sam: Okay, except there's nothing to talk about.
Dean: Okay.
Sam: Okay.
[Long silence]
Dean: I just figured, since we're opening up veins that maybe you'd want to talk about the guy who you made sell his soul.
Sam: The guy who you then killed, right? I mean, that's the same guy we're talking about?
Dean: I was a demon.
Sam: Oh, you were a demon? Oh, I didn't realize that.
Dean: Hey, man. Lester was gonna pay for that soul shake sooner or later. So technically, it's still on you.
Sam: What do you want from me, Dean? Look, I w- I'm not happy about it, okay? But I needed to find you. So if I had to...bend a few rules...
Dean: Go dark.
Sam: Go dark. Sure, label it if you want.
Dean: Look, man, again, I'm not complaining, okay? In fact, I'm doing just the opposite of complaining. I...I just...You know, between Lester and the others...
Sam: There weren't others.
Dean: Okay, either way, maybe we both needed that time off. This is good. This is good.
Sam: Yeah, okay.

Awkward talk, but hey, at least they're talking way more here than they did in a lot of the Season 9 episodes so I'm already encouraged. Maybe they finally have learning something.

They stake out the motel and spot girl who they think is Kate leaving her room. The boys follow her onto some wooded hiking trails, thinking she's searching out some breakfast, but when they confront her it's not Kate at all. She's all innocent...at first. Dean, dude...you've lost your touch. She easily pushes him to the ground and then sets on strangling Sam. What was Dean doing during this? Just watching? But then Kate appears and stops the girl and then keeps Dean from shooting her by saying the other girl is her sister. Nice little shout out to Adam Glass's writing friend and buddy, Robbie in there too. :)

Dean's all ready to shoot Kate, again, but Sam points out that she just saved their lives. Turns out Kate turned her sister into a werewolf in order to save her life after she was in a terrible car accident. Kate tried to teach Tasha how to be a good werewolf: only eat animals, never eat human hearts and all that. But it didn't take and Tasha took to killing humans. Now Kate just wants to fix her sister.

Sam: So back at the barn, that was all just an act to protect Tasha?
Kate: She's family. And yeah, worth eating a bullet for. [Knowing glances between the boys] And she needs me now more than ever. This is my mess. I gotta clean it up.

She hopes that by them laying low somewhere that she can get her sister turned around, but she's also prepared to do the worst if it comes to that. Dean then spins a lie about a cure for werewolves and Sam just goes along with it at first.

Dean: Kate and Tasha are monsters, okay? Last I checked, we kill monsters.
Sam: Right, but how can you possibly blame Kate for fighting for her sister? We do it all the time.
Dean: Well, yeah, and that's worked wonders for us.
Sam: Well, we're still here, aren't we?
Dean: Yeah, but is it right? I mean, all that you've done for me, I've still got this Mark.
Sam: And we'll figure that out. We always do. But you can't take whatever's happened to us or to you and - and dump it at these girls' feet.

Dean's willing to listen if Sam's got another plan, but I guess he doesn't have one because we then see the boys driving at night in the car with Kate asleep in the passenger seat and Sam in the back.

Time for some more bro chatting! :D

Sam: I gotta tell you something. I, uh...I lied about Lester.
Dean: What?
Sam: There were others.
Dean: Other humans?
Sam: No. No, no. And I'm sure there were a few hunters I rubbed - or I...punched the wrong way, but...no. I pretty much saved my best stuff for the bad guys. But you gotta understand something, Dean. I watched you die. And I carried you. I carried your corpse into your room and I put your dead body on your bed and then you just...
Dean: Yeah. I know. I guess I was hoping that note would, you know, fill in the blanks.
Sam: 'Don't look for me'? That note? Yeah, that was really informative. Thanks.
Dean: Yeah, I...
Sam: What?
Dean: It's embarrassing, you know?
Sam: What's embarrassing?
Dean: All of it. You know, the - the - that note. Crowley. Everything.
Sam: Dean, you were a demon.
Dean: I was a demon? Oh, thanks. I didn't - I didn't realize.
Sam: Shut up.
Dean: Not to mention, I never even said 'Thank you', so...
Sam: You don't ever have to say that, not to me.
Dean: Well...good. Then I guess...guess it's all gravy. Little R&R and we are back at it.

Aw, boys!!!! *hugs them*
Sam talking about watching Dean die and then carrying his body back to the bunker...*wibbles*

The honesty is back, the joking around. It's good to see. It's still a little awkward and stilted, but you can see they're working through it...something that never happened last season. Love Sam's line about Dean not needing to say thank you to him. *draws hearts* My boys are back!!!!

They get to the family cabin that the sisters set up as a meeting place and then Dean handcuffs Kate to the steering wheel and she realizes the jig is up.

Kate: But she can be saved!
Dean: No. Tasha's in too deep. You don't ever come back from that, not ever.

Speaking from experience there, Dean? And I noticed Sam looked a little guilty in the backseat after Dean said that. Sam, what did you do? :(

Sam finds Tasha, but little sister has turned 2 guys to make her own little pack and one of them has taken Dean hostage. Wow, Dean's really gotten rusty. Guess without his super-demon power he's lost any fighting skills whatsoever. The dudes also pull Kate from the car. Kate has to join the pack or walk away. So to prove her loyalty, Tasha tells her eat Sam's heart.

Sam: Kate...you don't have to do this.
Tasha: No one's talking to you, Paul Bunyan!

LOL! Line. Of. The. Episode. XD

Kate refuses. Werewolf dudes take the boys in the other room and prepare to kill them while the sisters talk. Tasha feels powerful for the first time, like a super hero. She tries to convince Kate that she doesn't have to be alone anymore. But Kate hugs and then stabs her sister. Poor Kate. :(

The boys deal with the werewolf dudes, well, Sam does. Dean just sort of kneels there struggling with his dude. I'm telling you...rusty. I mean, Sam killed them both with ONE ARM! Yeah, that ought to shut big brother up with the teasing, huh? Anyway, the boys find Tasha's dead body and that Kate has taken off again.

Another car chat!!!

Dean: If you've got an itch to scratch...
Sam: Dean, look, we both jumped on this case. I agree. Equal parts blame there. But the whole idea behind laying low was to rest, to...try and deal with everything we - everything you went through. Maybe we jumped back in too fast. I mean, Dean, you were a demon. You still have the Mark. Didn't you ever wanna talk about it?
Dean: Talk about it? Talk about it how?
Sam: Come on, man.
Dean: I am coming on, Sam. Look, I know what happened. I was there. Remember? I'm not trying to get by it. I just...That's not what this was about.
Sam: Then what is this about?
Dean: About gettin' back in the saddle. Okay? Doing something good, not stewing in my own crap.
Sam: And what if you're not ready?

Then Kate calls (her phone's still in the car) and she agrees to stay clean, though she makes no promises. We see her walk off down the road...alone again.

Back to the boys conversation...

Dean: Let's say you're right.
Sam: About what?
Dean: Everything. Maybe I'm not ready to hunt. But I am just trying to do the right thing, man, 'cause I'm so sick and tired of doing the wrong one.

Oh, my dear Dean.

============================

This episode might not have been as super exciting as the first 3, but it had lots of nice brotherly moments and a simple, yet tied to the boys, case. It was nice and a good, solid ep. :)

It was good to see the silent communication between the brothers...the knowing looks, the sad looks. What they've gone through individually has definitely effected them and it's good to see them both taking things slow while feeling each other's thoughts and emotions out. They're being super cautious about one another's feelings ("I'm not trying to start anything...") which is unusual for them, but necessary with where their relationship currently is. There's no hurt feelings and there's no grudges. I think they understand that they each had to do what they did. They may not be proud of it, but they had no choice.

So we have a week off due to Election Day next Tuesday and on Nov. 11th is the 200th episode!!!! Can't wait! :D
