First Impressions: 10x05 "Fan Fiction"

Another season, another stab at writing short tediously long, but entertaining reviews (I hope).

It's heeeerrrrreeeee!!!!! Finally, the 200th epic-sode is upon us. And was it epic? Oh, yes it was! :D

This is going to be a bit disjointed, but here goes...

How important is the Samulet to the fans? Pretty darned important if this ep is anything to go by and the show's producers and writers know it. So it gets mentioned right off the bat. Love how Siobhan complains about it hitting her in the mouth all the time, just like Jensen said it bothered him. Hee!

I had to laugh when the teacher got taken by the scarecrow in the teaser. It was kinda funky and clumsy.

"It needs more ehhh." [handwave] LOL! Love, love, love for all the title cards!!! They even put in all the special ones! *happy dances*

Who'd have thought we'd hear a Gordon Lightfoot song on SPN? Love this song though. ;)
And OMG this SCENE!!!! *swoons* Thank you Robbie Thompson and show...you know what we want and you finally gave it to us...the car all shiny & pretty and the boys all sexy and in single layers. THANK YOU!!!!!!
Can Jensen look any hotter all greasy and dirty in that t-shirt? Yeah...I'll just be replaying this scene over and over and drooling over his arms...

Minor quibble, but isn't usually the room numbered 200 on the 2nd floor? I know, I know, I'm using my logical brain too much here. *tosses it out the window*

Since when isn't Dean feeling back to normal? I thought he was back to normal in the last ep? Weird.

Dean: “Sam, out there, hunting, it’s the only normal I know.”

A shot from the inside of the trunk and a "We've got work to do." :D

OMG The reactions from the boys as they walk into that auditorium and see part of the play...PRICELESS! Jensen & Jared in top form. Sam spotting the girls playing Sam & Dean flashing the FBI badges and then him stopping Dean from doing it was hilarious. Agents Smith and...Smith - no relation. LOL

Dean: “There is no singing in Supernatural!”
Maeve: "Well, this is Marie's interpretation."
Dean: [Scoffs] “If there was singing, and that’s a big if, if there was singing, it would be classic rock. Not this Andrew Floyd Webber crap!”

Heehee! And Sam corrects him on the name. Dean's really having a hard time swallowing this play while Sam seems more accepting of it. Sam's backpeddling..."No? No, no." when he sees Dean's serious-face-of-disapproval is so adorable!

And of course, Dean can't keep his hands off the gun props. :P

Marie: “They’re rehearsing the B.M. scene."
Dean: “The bowel movement scene?"
Marie: “No, the boy melodrama scene. You know, the scene where the boys get together and they’re driving or leaning against Baby, drinking a beer, sharing their feelings. The two of them, alone but together, bonded, united."

So funny how Dean doesn't like 'Sam & Dean' standing so close together. Haha! Someone mentioned this on Twitter, too and then brought up how close Jensen & Jared sit or stand next to each other. *g*

And here we go with the subtext stuff...Dean doesn't like it and makes the girls separate a bit.

Sam messing with the stage lights and then apologizing...heehee!

Dean gives Marie a summary of Seasons 6-9:
“Sam came back from Hell, but without his soul. Then Cas brought in a bunch of Leviathans from Purgatory. They lost Bobby. And then Cas and Dean got stuck in Purgatory. Sam hit a dog. They met a prophet named Kevin, they lost him too. Then Sam underwent a series of trials in an attempt to close the Gates of Hell, which nearly cost him his life. And Dean became a demon, Knight of Hell actually."

But Marie doesn't believe it, calling it the worst bit of fan fiction she's ever heard. :P
Ah...Destiel...and Jensen breaks the 4th wall and looks at the camera! Outstanding! Get the feeling this is Jensen's standard reaction to Destiel and fanfic in general...especially when it's brought up at conventions. LOL

And then he apparently tells Sam about it and Sam is trying to come up with other names for the ship, but with Sam & Cas instead: Sastiel, Samstiel. Love seeing Jared lean against the car like that, btw. It's also the first time I noticed him holding his injured arm/shoulder carefully. This ep was filming during VanCon in August and Jared said he'd decided to take the sling off a little early for this ep and wouldn't be wearing it anymore even though he probably shouldn't have. So it looks like he was still moving it gingerly here.

I am SO distracted by that Pancake Breakfast sign. No kidding. *drools*
The boys decide there's no case here...

Sam: "Casdean?"
Dean: "Shut your face! Get in the car!"

LMAO! Love bossy Dean! And it's so cute how Sam's face just falls and he reverts to little brother Sam and gets in the car. Heehee!

Maggie's (Sam) has had enough..."if it's not canon, then it shouldn't be in the show". She's going to report to the principal in the morning. But she gets grabbed by the scary Scarecrow! Eeep!

The boys are now back on the case...and there was a flower at each of the abductions.

The boys try to confess that they're the real Sam & Dean...and of course Maeve and Marie don't believe them. :P
Oh, and X-Files reference!!! "I want to believe." :D

Maeve: “You guys are way too old to be Sam or Dean. More of a Rufus/Bobby combo, maybe.”

First theory: the Scarecrow is a Tulpa.
So Marie takes Dean to where the Scarecrow prop is...and it's...heehee....cute! Love how the button eyes are red and blue...in reference to Jensen & Jared's marks on the show, perhaps? Seriously, this was the first thing I thought of when I saw those eyes. Filmmaking geek much? :P

So they burn the Scarecrow and Dean uses the "asshatt" word and Marie is impressed, but...

New theory: It's not a Tulpa...it's Calliope.
Dean doing the Arnold voice...OMG hilarious! XD

Calliope runs the Scarecrow and will eat the author, but not until the play and Marie's vision is realized. "The show must go on." And on, and on, and.. :D

Ok, when Dean goes "How you doin' champ?" to Marie...that totally looked like Jensen talking to a fan there. Is that just me? It just seemed like he let the Dean mask fall a bit there. Not that I'm complaining, because I actually think it was very sweet, cute, and endearing and so like Jensen. :)

Dean's face when he finds out Marie is a Sam girl. Too, too adorable...poor Dean. :P

Marie: “Writer/director/actor. I’m gonna Barbara Streisand this bitch.”
You go, girl! \0/

Haha! The smoke machine!!! Any fan who's visited the set on location can appreciate this little shout-out. :)

Dean: "The...Samulet?"
Marie: "That amulet is a symbol of the Winchesters' brotherly love."

Second reference, people!!!

Dean's pep-talk to the actors...

Dean: “I want you to stand as close as she wants you to, and I want you to put as much sub into that text as you possibly can. There is no other road, no other way, no day but today.”
Maeve: “Did he just quote Rent?"
Marie: “Not enough to get us in trouble."
Dean: "Now you get out there and you kick it in the ass!"

Awwww...love that line to remember Kim Manners.

And the boys reactions to the cast doing the Ghostfacers thing. :P

Other minor quibble...how would these girls know about Gallagher. He was popular back when I was in high school and that was a long time ago. Since we didn't really get to see all that was planned in the show...what on earth were the ponchos for? Where the play's Sam & Dean going to go wild with the holy water?

The Road So Far - Lyrics
"John and Mary, husband and wife / bringing home a brand-new life / his name is Sammy / I'm big brother Dean / the perfect family / or so it seemed. The demon's visits had begun / it believed Sam was the chosen one / it burned my mother and it cursed my brother / leaving us in tears. On the road so far / yeah, the road so far / we are in dad's car / on the road so far / dad was driven, no turning back / he wouldn't stop without the payback / he trained us both to track and hunt and kill / he took away our own free will. / So that's where we are, on the road so far / saving people, hunting things, family business, back in swing / driving down the road so far."

Dean bopping his head to the song. LOL
It's kind of humorous how Sam totally misinterprets Dean's finger pointing. Dude! What do you think you two are going backstage with sharp, pointy stakes for? Anyway, Sam gets taken and we do get some great worried/panicking Dean.

Sam wakes up in the basement with Maggie and the teacher...and Calliope.

I'll Just Wait Here" - Lyrics
"That's what I'll do / I'll just wait here, then / wait for my cue. / I raised you from Perdition, to be God's ammunition / but now you need some rest, so I will do what's best / and just wait here, then / that's all I'll do / I'll just wait here, then / I'll wait for you."

A Single Man Tear - Lyrics
“A single man tear slips down his face / He shows emotion without a trace / He hides behind a mask so strong / Worried that he could be wrong. / I wish that he could see the way I see him / The perfect brother, a man without sin / Cuz underneath the manly sheen / It is my brother, a boy named Dean / A single man tear, a single man tear / that's all we fear.”

And Dean's attacking the Scarecrow on the stage...and getting tossed around like a rag doll. Must be Tuesday.

Calliope: “Supernatural has everything: Life, death, resurrection, redemption. But above all, family. All set to music you can really tap your toe to. It isn’t some meandering piece of genre dreck. It’s epic.”

With a lot of intercutting we see Maggie and the teacher help Sam stab Calliope with the stake and then Marie (playing Sam) picks up the fallen stake on stage and uses it to stab the Scarecrow. Kinda odd that she yells out "No chick-flick moments." before she kills it though, considering that's Dean's line. But I digress...

Both Calliope and the Scarecrow explode in a shower of purple goo. Lovely. Bet those people in the front row are wishing they'd put on those ponchos like that one guy. But the crowd loves it..."Take a bow, Sammy."

Maeve to Sam: "You know, if you cut your hair a little, you'd make a pretty good Dean."
And Sam's hair is a major topic of discussion...again. LOL

Dean: "I have my version and you have yours."
In other words...the show is telling their story and we can tell ours...and it's okay.

Marie has a gift for Dean...Love how she calls him that, btw. Samulet!!!! Well, the prop one anyway.

Marie: "You never should've thrown this away."
Dean: "It never really worked. I don't need a symbol to remind me how I feel about my brother, so..."
Marie: "Just take it...jerk."
Dean: "Bitch."

Awwww....*squishes show*

Sam then tells Dean that he was right, that staying cooped up in motels isn't helping them.

'Sam': "We need to get back on the road, Dean, doing what we do best."
'Dean': "You're right, Sammy. Out on the road just the two of us."
'Sam': "The two of us against the world."
Sam to Dean: "What she said."

Did you see Dean give a little smile and close his eyes at that? OMG All the feelings!

Then the cast sings "Carry On Wayward Son" and the boys stand there and react to it all and it's so utterly beautiful!!!! And we get a little mention of Adam! Ouch! That must've hurt, huh boys?

We cut to the boys in the car at night and Dean digs out the Samulet prop necklace and hangs it from the rear-view mirror. Then Sam gives a little smile and Dean gives him one of those all-knowing looks and they drive off into the sunset! Nice VFX shot btw. So they kinda sorta gave us the Samulet back. Kinda. :)

Then the last scene...holy cow! What an ending!!!
Someone claimed the publisher's ticket...Marie goes to meet him, asking him what he thought of the play and...

OMG IT'S CHUCK!!!!! "Not bad."
Gaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!! Chuck's ALIVE!!!!!! :D :D :D

Well I've gushed over this episode quite a bit, but really, what did you expect from me? *g*

Bravo to Robbie Thompson on a true "love letter to the fans" and to Jensen & Jared and the rest of the guest cast for bringing it to life. It hit all the best points of this show we love so much and I'm so proud that Supernatural has reached this milestone. Let's get another 100!

Btw, for those who are hating on this ep because it didn't have Misha and Mark in it: Really? I'm sorry, but the show isn't just about Cas and/or Crowley. I love the characters, but at it's heart SPN is about Sam & Dean and their journey. Cas and Crowley are side characters. Plus, I honestly don't know how you could have fit them into the episode as it was written. It would have become a mess.

I know I'm going to be enjoying this episode for a very long time...and having the songs stuck in my head for days to come. *g*
