First Impressions: 10x23 "Brother's Keeper"

YAY!!!! I finally got this review done!!!!! \0/
Thank you for your patience. I meant to get this done a lot sooner, but last week was pretty lousy.
There are caps included for the pretty. :)

Ok, mixing the 200th episode cast singing "Carry On Wayward Son" with the Kansas version was absolute brilliance!

♦ I get that Sam is willing to do literally anything to save his brother, but just because you don't know what the consequences are of using the Book Of The Damned doesn't mean you should go ahead and use it. Cas is smart to question whether it's a good thing or not. But of course, they are pretty much out of options.
♦ Poor Sam...showing up at the cabin crime scene and seeing the carnage Dean left behind, including the traumatized girl. :( I like how the audio gets all muffled as Sam looks at Rudy's body.
♦ I know this motel location, too. Where Sam's just driving and spots the Impala parked. Yep, been there last year. :) Oh, and then he gets inside, sees the destroyed room, and the keys along with Dean's note: "She's all yours." Cue the crying.

♦ Oh, Dean...waking up all sweaty and face-down on a motel room floor...drinking. Baby, you are so not good. :( Jensen, however, is amazing in this simple scene.
image host
image host
♦ Love the little fist clench at the opening of the crime scene.
♦ So is Dean being a total dick because of the Mark or because Sam's not there to act as a buffer? Maybe a little of both?
♦ We finally get to meet Rudy, who Dean talked to on the phone in the previous ep. Dean wants him off the case.
♦ Holy crap! Dean what the hell are you doing talking to the worried parents like that? And it gets him totally nothing. Geez. But little brother knows something...Dean pointing the gun at the kid was totally hot, btw.
image host
♦ As uncaring as Dean is right now, he is still a total badass of a hunter and seeing him slice and dice vamps is always fun. *g* However, letting Rudy get killed was totally not cool! The bark just before the guy knifed Rudy was so primal and unexpected. Kind of like when Dean was a demon and roared at Sam.
image host
image host
♦ Great scene back at the motel room as Dean's washing up and sees bloody Cas & Rudy in the mirror (hellooooo guilt!) and then totally goes ballistic on the room. I will say Jensen is excellent at these violent scenes. I wonder if he finds them cathartic? Oh, and Jensen in a black tee? Yeah, I'm totally all hot and bothered here. Heehee! *swoons* :D

♦ Smart move with the hollow-tipped yet potent bullets. Not that they frighten Rowena at all. It's negotiation time...her freedom and the codex for curing Dean.
image host
image host
"Ickyboo loo" LOL! Who came up with this text???
♦ Hee! Love Rowena calling Cas "feathers". :P
♦ Nice of Rudy to give Sam a call about Dean's whereabouts. ;)
♦ When did Sam get a sample of Dean's hair??? Did he already have it for some spell-work, just in case? I mean, Dean's been AWOL for a little while now. Just trying to figure out the timing of this...which I will never get an answer to.
♦ Crossroads!!! I know where this was filmed at. :) "You're not in my contact's list." LOL And there's the only funny moment of the whole ep. And he makes Cas beg!
♦ Whoah! Crowley really knows how to make an entrance. So Seth isn't just any normal guy working in a diner...he's long, lost Oscar who Rowena loved.
♦ As rotten and scheming as Crowley is, I do feel sorry for him for having a mother who didn't love him.
image host
♦ And then she goes ahead and kills Oscar anyway to complete the spell. So I guess she loved him, but not enough not to sacrifice him. Which is interesting considering the similar decision that the boys just made.
image host
♦ Ok, Rowena does the spell and then breaks loose of her chains...the ones Sam put on her episodes ago. So was she just going along with it and able to break free all this time or did she throw in a little extra something into the spell that allowed her to do that? Even Crowley is surprised, thinking she wasn't powerful enough...which she clearly is. And then she activates her rabid dog spell on Cas (guess even angels aren't immune to the power of a witch) and points him towards Crowley. Yikes!
image host

♦ Always fascinates me how the boys find these old, abandoned buildings and somehow the electricity still works. Anyway, Dean summoning Death is very cool. Nice flashing/breaking lights...oh, and hearing Jensen recite Latin is awesome!
♦ I do love the relationship between Dean and Death...it's all about the food! LOL Seriously, though...Dean just whipped all that food up himself? "All the bad fat." Heehee!
image host
♦ All the food is an offering. For? Dean: "I want you to kill me." Noooooooo!!!!!!! :(
♦ Dean admits he's tried to fight the Mark and he can't anymore. There's no other option but death left. But Death can't kill him...he won't even get rid of the Mark. Turns out it's the key that's holding back The Darkness: "A horribly destructive amoral force that was beaten back by God and his archangels in a terrible war." So Death can remove the Mark, but only if Dean passes it on to someone else to ensure the lock remains and the Darkness stays secured. But Dean won't do that to anyone. So Death offers to send Dean away, not even on the Earth, where he can live and not be a danger to anyone. Whaaaaa????
♦ So he calls Sam....oh, the emotions! Sam's still trying to deny that Dean's actions were really him. Dean: "Brother, I'm done." Sam: "No. No, you're not. Dean." Dean: "Grab a pen, it's time to say goodbye." :(
image host
image host
♦ Oh, Sam...if only you hadn't parked the Impala right. there. *sigh*
image host
♦ So now Sam needs to die???? What??????? o.O
♦ Yeah, Sam is a huge threat...I mean he is willing to pretty much risk anything to save Dean. So it's not like Death is wrong here. I love how intimidated Sam is by him too...and then there's Death's grudge against him. "Then there was that time you stood me up."
image host
♦ I love this discussion between the boys...Dean being blind to all the good they've done and seeing only the bad, how evil they are. “We track evil and kill it, the family business, is that it? Look at the tape, Sam. Evil tracks us. It nukes everything in our vicinity, our family, our friends, it’s time we put a proper name to what we really are and we deal with it.” On the other side of the coin Sam realizes that Dean's not seeing things right and saying "We are not evil. We’re far from perfect, but we are good. That thing on your arm is evil, but not you! Not me."
♦ Of course, what isn't even brought up in this conversation between the boys is how Dean would feel about killing his own brother. Sure, he'd be alone, not a threat to anyone, but can you imagine Dean feeling that utter loss and guilt for eternity? My goodness...such a horrible thought! Yeah, "greater good" and all that, but it's a terrible way to leave Dean...a hero and one who's saved the world several times over.
♦ And then there's the fight...which Dean totally wants. I must admit I love seeing the boys fight only because all I see is Jensen & Jared fighting, which I know they enjoy because it's physical and fun and they practice it all. And it's just cool to watch. And as usual, Dean wins. Really, I think the only fight the boys have had that Dean has lost over the 10 years is that one in "When The Levee Breaks" and that was only because Sam was juiced up on demon blood.
Sam: "You'll never, ever hear me say that you--the real you is anything but good." Oh, my heart! And Sam's tears... :(
image host
♦ Now that's a scythe. Geez. Dean: "Close your eyes. Sammy, close your eyes." OMG...and Sam's in tears, looking up at his big brother like he's done all his life, trusting, loving. And then Sam brings out 2 photos, asking Dean to...“Take these and one day, when you find your way back, let these be your guide. They can help you remember what it was to be good, what it was to love.” Kinda sad that John isn't in the photos, but I think I read Jim Michaels say something on Twitter about it. Clearance or some sort of reason. *sigh*
image host
image host
♦ If you watch Dean, you can see where the wheels turn and he makes his decision, looking at those photos and then at Sam. The emotion breaks through the power of the Mark at last. Only Sam could do this. I'd like to think that Sam saw that moment, recognized it, and thought..."Maybe Dean's not going to go through with it?" Even with Dean saying, "Forgive me." But Sam closed his eyes all the same. Maybe hoping and trusting but still ready to die for Dean all the same. That's what makes this scene so powerful, the trust and the loyalty no matter what.
image host
♦ Dean takes his swing and...kills Death!!!! I love how Death doesn't show any expression really and just disintegrates into dust. Very cool!
image host
♦ Dammit! No hug! Just a hand up. *sigh*
image host
♦ Holy cow! The effects as Dean is cured of the Mark. Awesomesauce! It was like that lightening just sucked it right out of his arm.
image host
♦ The boys don't have much time to be happy about Dean being Mark-free. 'Cause here comes the Darkness! Awesome effects! Oh, that damned pothole!!!!! At least the boys were together and inside the Impala when that cloud hit. We can only hope they survive relatively unscathed in the Season 11 opener!

Sam: Cas, what are we supposed to do, huh? Just sit on our asses and do nothing?
Castiel: No, we find Dean.
Sam: And then what? The only thing that stopped Cain was death, do you wanna kill Dean, because I don't. And the only way I know how to save my brother is to cure the Mark, and yes I know there will be consequences; but not you, and not Dean, not anybody can tell me what those consequences are. So I'm not going to let my brother d-destroy himself on a guess... We save Dean.

Crowley: Who summons anymore? Couldn't you call?
Castiel: You're not in my contacts list.

Death: Before there was light, before there was God and the archangels there wasn't nothing, there was the Darkness. A horribly destructive amoral force that was beaten back by God and his archangels in a terrible war. God locked the Darkness away where it could do no harm, and he created a Mark that would serve as both lock and key, which he entrusted to his most valued lieutenant, Lucifer. But the Mark began to assert its own will, revealed itself as a curse and began to corrupt. Lucifer became jealous of Man, God banished Lucifer to Hell, Lucifer passed the Mark to Cain. Who passed the Mark to you, the proverbial finger in the dyke.

Dean: Truth is, when I left, I thought the only way out was my death. Well, I was wrong Sam, it's yours.

Sam: What evil?
Dean: The Darkness.
Sam: What the hell is that?
Dean: Well, what does it sound like? Does it sound like a good thing?
Death: Even if I remove Dean from the playing field, we're still left with you. Loyal, dogged Sam, who I suspect will never rest until he sets his brother free, will never rest until his brother is free of the Mark, which simply cannot happen lest the Darkness be set free. Then there was that time you stood me up.

Crowley: Why the long faces? Oh, let me guess, Mother showed you her 'mustn't touch it' again.
Castiel: Do you have the ingredients?
Crowley: The quince cost me a major IOU from a Palestinian warlock, the gold from the calf -- well let's just say I'll be hanged under certain sexual deviancy laws if I show my face in Jordan again.
Rowena: And the third?
Crowley: Ah yes. All my long life, I wondered what I'd done to deserve a mother that showed no love. I pained over it, I built my bloody kingdom on top of it. Then one day epiphany struck, my mother was incapable of loving anything, for the first time in hundreds of years I felt free. Then you showed up in my dungeon, we communed and I began to realize you weren't incapable of love, you're incapable of loving me.

Sam: You'll never, ever hear me say that you--the real you is anything but good. But you're right, before you hurt anyone else, you have to be stopped at any cost. I understand. Do it.

Death: It's for family you must proceed, Dean. To be what you are, to become what you've become is a stain on their memory. Do it, or I will.

Dean: You okay?
Sam: I'll live. You?
Dean: Fantastic. I think I just killed Death.

Sam: This is good Dean, this is good. The-the Mark is off your arm, nothing crazy happened, you got your Baby back.
Dean: Yeah, I'm sure everything's perfectly fine.

Oh, goodness what an epic season finale! :D
Yeah, the Darkness has been unleashed but the Mark is gone and the boys are together, so...who cares? lol

Of course there's a few questions...

* Is Crowley still alive? I'm guessing...yes. He's proven very tough to kill. Can't see that changing now.
* Is Cas going to die from Rowena's spell? Again, guessing no here.
* So what happens when you kill Death? Does this mean nobody can die? Are the reapers all aimless now with no idea who to reap? Surely there's got to be some consequence for this. Does Dean have to take over Death's job???
* What exactly is the Darkness and what effect will it have? I'm guessing it's going to be a dark cloud that envelopes the earth, ruins crops and communications. I'd like to see sort of what was depicted in the series Dark Angel where everything was run down and there were brown outs and such. But maybe on an even grander scale. Probably too expensive to pull off now, but it'd be interesting.
* What's going to happen to the car and the boys? Can't imagine them escaping that black cloud without something destructive and damaging happening. Maybe the car flips and the boys are injured? Though I will say that Jensen's idea of Dean disappearing is intriguing...not so much him waking up on a beach with no memory. Oh, Jensen...always wanting that tropical episode. :P
* Another random thought that popped in my head was..."Uh, oh. How is Dean going to react to Sam going ahead with the spell when he told his brother to stop?". Dean was pretty pissed off before, especially because Charlie got killed but, that was with the Mark's influence. So I'm hoping he'll simply be grateful that he's free of the Mark and forgive Sam for his actions. After all, Dean's risked a lot (not to mention putting Kevin in harm's way that cost him his life) when Sam's life was on the line. I think they're even at this point and I really don't want another wedge put between the brothers.

I can't wait to see what happens next season! So much potential! And I hear they've already got the first 8 episodes written. Bring it! :D
