NOTE: I reviewed this episode the day before 11x09 and of course I had no idea what was going to happen in the Mid-Season Finale.
Ok, let me start out by saying that while this is an enjoyable episode for the humor and the Sam backstory…I have some serious problems with it.
The biggest one is Dean’s attitude pretty much throughout the episode. For a guy who’s seen fairies in-person, not to mention werewolves, vampires, demons, angels, wendigos and hundreds of other monsters, why on earth does he have so much trouble wrapping his brain around Zana? And then to have him be so negative and belligerent the whole time…I feel this episode really painted Dean in a bad light. Sure, he came around to the idea of Sully and that he helped Sam…eventually, but by then the damage was already done. I spent most of the episode cringing at just about all of Dean’s reactions and lines. It became distracting, even during the second viewing.
My second issue was with the actor playing young Sam. Now granted, he’s no Colin Ford, but then nobody could be. However, I found some of his line readings to be a little stilted, especially in the scene where he decides to join Dean & his dad and leave Sully behind.
I’d also like to talk about Sam’s whole theory that he has to go back to the Cage. Why??? What’s he been shown so far? Him being tortured in Hell, a talk with the younger version of his dad, and the outside of the Cage with someone inside. I’m not sure putting all that together would make me come to the same conclusion. It’s all still pretty vague, honestly. And we don’t know where or how God and his archangels contained the Darkness before except by using the Mark as a lock. So Sam thinking he has to go to the Cage with Lucifer? Doesn’t add up IMO. How is THAT going to defeat the Darkness? What does it even have to do with her? I get that Sam feels guilty for unleashing the Darkness on the world, but it’s Dean who has a direct tie with her, not Sam. As far as we know Sam is not even a blip on Amara’s radar.
Okay, let’s go on with my notes on the episode…
WTH is this kind of parenting? I never would have gotten away with that kind of stuff when I was a kid.
I can’t believe Sparkle actually has hooves instead of hands. LOL!
Not the actual child’s scream. That was totally an audio sound byte from somewhere. What? I can tell these things.
Holy Hannah! Does Sam get up at 6:30 every morning??? Ugh.
Seeing him all sleepy-headed really is adorable though…and totally not in hunter mode since he missed the spread on the kitchen table at first. Hee!
Oh and…yay for single layers!!!! And Dean in that robe… *tries not to drool*
Poor Maddie…that would be really traumatizing to see all that death and blood. :(
Is that one of the left over duckies from the great duck collection of 2011???
Continuity Error! At first the mermaid’s mascara is all dark and looks like it’s running and then when she hums and lays back in the pool it’s not. Ooopsie.
Weems rockin’ the mullet.
Why did they have young Sam pick up the army men & Leggos? We were shown in Swan Song that the Leggos were put in the car’s vents when the boys were a lot younger.
No way did Dean not only find the gal with the VW Beetle just like that AND get himself knocked out so easily! I call foul! I mean, what did he do? Just drive around until he saw the car parked somewhere???
I like Dean’s speech to Reese that saved Sully’s life…and him calling Sam his “little brother”. *hearts*
I love Dean for being determined to “find another way” to defeat the Darkness besides Sam going to the Cage. And again I want to the hug the boys at the end of the episode!
* Dean going into full-on parent mode, angrily tying his robe and ordering Sam into the library to talk, and Sam bowing his head like a little kid….so, so cute!
* “The Burt and Ernie pretext.” Oh, the boys in those sweaters!
* OMG Dylan Everett as young Dean!!!!! So great to see him again. Wish it had been more than one brief scene though.
* Maddie’s mom coming into the crime scene of a bedroom and spreading glittery blood all over her face. Brilliant. Sully: “Oh, it’s on her face. Sam, it’s on her face! She’s got Sparkle on her face!”
* So much love for hearing the Family Theme music again! ♥ :)
* Weems playing air-guitar. Hee!
* Sam telling Sully about possibly going back to the Cage in order to defeat the Darkness. Jared just rocked this scene. Beautiful.
* Sully: “Surprise!!!!”
Sam: “Who are you?” Hee!
* Dean’s frowny face. *g*
* “Manicorn.” I love Dean and his names for things. :P
* Dean suggesting a family shower. LOL Oh, Dean…so awkward and inappropriate.
“What is all of this crap? When did you start eating this stuff? Is that marshmallow on nachos?”
-Dean to Sam
Sully: Someone killed my friend.
Dean: You mean your imaginary imaginary friend?
Sully: First off, 'imaginary friend' is more of a descriptive term, how you just said it, that was a little... offensive, just to be honest. Secondly we're zanna. Me and the victim, we're zanna... We help kids. We're the good guys.
Dean: “You mean Mork from Ork here is your dumbass imaginary friend Sully?"
Sully: “Uh, I’m not dumb or ass."
Sam: “When I was 9-years-old, you know what I wanted more than anything? Marshmallow nachos."
Dean: “Yeah, you were a weird-ass kid."
Dean: So Sparkle is a unicorn and also a man?
Dean: So, a manicorn.
Sully: If I show you all we can see, you can't tell a soul.
Dean: Yeah, 'cause chicks dig the whole 'imaginary friend' thing.
Dean: Oh, oh yeah. That kid is gonna need all the shrinks.
Sam: Wait a second, so his blood is glittery?
Sully: Even when he's dead, Sparkle can't stop shining.
Dean: And a hot shower does wonders.
Sam: Real deep scrub and purify. Linda: For Maddie? Dean: The whole family, just get the whole family in there. You know the family that showers together...
Sully: Pull up! Pull up!
Sully: Sam, I want you to listen to me. You can be whatever you want to be. You're not Dean, you're not your dad, you're Sam. And Sam is awesome.
“Hey Weems, when was the last time you saw Nicky the Mermaid? God, I can’t believe I just said that.”
-Dean to Weems
Dean: I gotta ask. Hey, acid wash, what's so special about you?
Weems: Mermaids dig me?
Young Sam: I'm a Winchester. I hunt monsters. Why would I want anything else?
Sully: You know I'm not gonna lie to you. When you went off to hunt, I considered that one of my biggest failures. Just seemed so clear to me that you wanted something else. But, I was wrong. It all worked out, didn't it?
Sam: I don't know about that.
Sully: Come on, you're a hero. Sam, you saved the world. I keep track of my kids, and you did really good, Sam.
Dean: Reese. Trust me, revenge ain't gonna to make you feel better. Listen, I have seen more than my share of monsters. I mean real monsters -- bad. These guys, these are Sesame Street Mother Teresas, but when I wasn't there for my little brother, Sully was. Now look, I'm not saying he didn't make a mistake, but you know there is not a monstrous bone in his body.
Sam: Ever think maybe you're a hero to me? Sully, one thing I've learned, heroes aren't perfect.
Sully: Sometimes they're scared, but that just means the thing they're facing, it's super important, and nobody else is gonna go for it because nobody else has got the balls.
“You’re not gonna ever get me to admit that you’re not the weirdest thing out there, but you’re a good weird.”
-Dean to Sully
