First Impressions Review: 11x21 "All In The Family"

Watched the episode a little late, but I'm getting this posted as soon as possible.

Sweet! We pick up right where the last episode ended - with the boys seeing Chuck standing in the street. Of course Dean is the disbelieving one and then *snap* they're in the Bunker. KEVIN!!!!! Now that I totally didn't see coming. So great to see him again! Aw, and Chuck sends him on to Heaven. But isn't his mom gonna miss him???

Dean: "Holy crap."
LOL Yeah, pretty much. :P

OMG Sam is so adorable here. Totally fanboying over Chuck. Even Dean tells him "Babbling." Hee!
Oh, wow. So this is the scene Jensen talked about at Asylum16 con where he changed it a bit. Powerful stuff and a very emotional moment between Dean and Chuck.

Dean: Here's the thing, um, Chuck. And I mean no disrespect. Um, I'm guessing you came back to help with the Darkness, and that's great. That's you know, fantastic. But you've been gone a long, long time, and there's so much crap that has gone down on the earth for thousands of years. I mean the plagues and wars, slaughters, and you were... I don't know writing books? Going to fan conventions? Were you even aware or did you just tune it out?
Chuck: I was aware Dean.
Dean: But you did nothing. And again I'm not trying to piss you of, I don't want to turn into a pillar of salt.
Chuck: I actually, I didn't do that.
Dean: Okay. People pray to you. People build churches for you. Fight wars in your name, and you did nothing.
Chuck: You're frustrated. I get it. Believe me I was hands on, real hands on, for... wow, ages. I was so sure if I kept stepping in, teaching, punishing. These beautiful creatures I created would grow up. But it only stayed the same and I saw that I needed to step away, and let my baby find its way. Being over involved is no longer parenting. It's enabling.
Dean: But, It didn't get better.
Chuck: I've been mulling it over and from where I sit, I think it has.
Dean: Well from where I sit, it feels like you left us and you're trying to justify it.
Chuck: I know you had a complicated upbringing Dean, but don't confuse me with your dad.

I do disagree that this has anything to do with John and the way Dean was brought up. Dean's moved on from that in my opinion and as we've seen, Chuck isn't one to accept responsibility for his actions. Dean's bringing up the same issues Metatron did - why did God just leave? Why ignore all the sorrow, pain, and evil that's been happening? Why didn't he do anything about any of it? This is about God being the missing father to all his children, not John to his boys.

Speaking of pain & suffering, Lucifer is being put through the ringer by Amara. She keeps prompting him to call out to God for help, but he refuses because he knows God doesn't approve of him.
Casifer: "You may defeat him, but you will never be him."

Ouch on the sibling-o-meter here.
Wait a second! Amara has warded herself against God??? But she's trying to meet with him, right??? *iz confused*

Chuck: "I've always had faith in you. (looks at Sam) Even if you didn't return the favor. (looks at Dean)"

Okay, God's got some definite opinions on Lucifer and he's none too happy that the boys sprung him free from the cage. I do like that Sam spoke up and said that wasn't the plan. All too often in the past the boys just accept the blame for things that aren't their fault. Good for you, Sam! You boys were tricked into that! So I guess Lucifer didn't help God lock up Amara...Hmmmm.

Alright, I have no idea what Amara & Lucifer were talking about at the opening of this scene with God's fanclub and all that. Uh...what??? Anyway, she gets fed up with Lucifer's backtalking & silences him. I think she's sensing that Castiel is still in there somewhere...

Nice overhead shot of Dean in the bunker! Love those! :)
Oh, hello Amara. She shows Dean what Casifer looks like, how Cas is suffering along with Lucifer and to tell God about it should he cross paths with him. Uh, oh....

Oh, crap. Amara's killer fog is hitting Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, the boys are doing tons of online research and still can't find Amara.
Sam brings up that Rowena might be useful in finding her, but Dean kind of nixes that idea.
So Chuck has really settled into the bunker, napping and taking super long showers and singing. Dean had to tell him to "Cool it." Hee!
Sam's fanboying over Chuck again.... *g*
Chuck enters in Dean's robe and munching on doughnuts. Then he asks if they have any bacon. Dean: "You eat bacon?" Chuck: "Yeah." Hee!
Sam finds out about the Oklahoma town where the fog hit and killed thousands of people, except for one man. Chuck is not concerned. "She's baiting me." Geez, man...no love for the lost, huh?

Aah! Metatron's in a bar and sees the news broadcast that shows Sam & Dean approaching Chuck on the street.
So he calls Dean's cell while the boys are on the road. Scribe calling??? You mean Dean kept Metatron's number in his phone all this time? Weird. He tells the boys he needs to meet with them in person, to show them something they need to know concerning Chuck.

Boys in suits!!! They've come to Oklahoma to interview the one man who survived the fog - named Donatello - and, no not after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Dean. LOL
Oh, wow....is this guy a new prophet of God??? Sam thing happened to Kevin!
So the boys theorize that Crowley must have missed this guy when he was rounding up prophets to kill them and that Amara gave him the power? Uh, okay...

Uh, oh....Dean's getting another message from Amara. She wants to meet with him - alone. Gah!!!!

Love this scene in the car. Poor Donatello....this is a lot to take in over the course of just a few seconds - God is real, he has a sister named Amara who wants to take over the universe, and she's holding Lucifer captive, and the boys need Donatello to try and track Amara down.
Dean: "Look, we're not asking you to believe that this is true, just act like you do. People do it all the time."
Oh....He's sensing something, but he's not sure what it is yet.

Meanwhile, Chuck's relaxing in the bunker, eating Chinese and watching curling!
Dean enters and tells Chuck there might be a new prophet.
Chuck: "Neato!"
Dean suddenly looks nervous and realizes Chuck is using his laptop.
Chuck: "I've never seen so much porn....not in one sitting."
Busted!!!! LOL
So he asks Chuck to dial back the whole God stuff for Donatello's sake...and comments on how Chuck's wearing no pants. :P
And Donatello instantly becomes a believer! Hee!
He apologizes for being an atheist, but Chuck's cool with it. "I did include free will in the kit. Welcome aboard."

The boys go to meet Metatron at the bar....and warn him about pulling any crap. Heh.
Dean is not impressed with the tequila. LOL
Uh, oh....Metatron says Chuck will meet with Amara, but he won't take her down. He'll sacrifice himself. Sam doesn't buy it, so Metatron brings out the manuscript.

Metatron: "It's not an autobiography, it's a suicide note."

Crap.

Now Chuck's hanging out at a playground, and still eating. Dean's come to talk about him giving up. Chuck says he won't die, he'll be caged. "I trade myself for everything I created. It goes on." Dean says that Amara has personally told him she will kill God and then destroy everything he ever created. "We're not just some toys you throw away. I think you owe us more than that." Chuck counters that if his plan doesn't work that humans will have to step up, like Dean and Sam and other chosen ones. It's why God saved Dean years ago.

Chuck: "You're the firewall between light and darkness."

Whoah....
Of course, Dean doesn't believe he's capable of this. Give him a vampire any day, but he can't save the world from Amara. Bottom line: Chuck has to stop Amara, after that Dean doesn't care where he ends up.
Another beautiful scene, btw. Gorgeously acted by Jensen...and Rob. :)

Back at the bunker with Donatello...
Dean: "I got you a beer. I don't know if you drink."
Donatello: "I do now."

Dean tells him he's not sure if Chuck is with them. Maybe if they can get Lucifer back it's got a chance, but then they hate each other so....
Donatello: "Wow. I so miss being an atheist."
Metatron's in the bunker now. This is becoming a regular party.
Dean's not too happy to see him though. :P
Metatron does have a point: he knows the spells from the angel tablet, he knows Amara, and God.

Metatron: "I was by his side since the Creation. He believed in me. If there's something I can do to help save him and his creation then, it seems like I should."

Dean says the plan is to rescue Lucifer from Amara, they teleport out of the hideout and then they convince Chuck to use him to fight her. Metatron's skeptical.

And Dean's in the forest....Amara.
So being around Dean arouses sensations in Amara. Well, we've all been there when around Jensen. Makes total sense to me. *g* He says they should just walk away. Yeah, something tells me that's not going to work.

Meanwhile, Sam, Donatello, and Metatron have found Amara's hideout where Casifer is. Ok, so Metatron is chanting some spells while Sam outlines the plan to Casifer, but if he says no they'll just leave him there. Lucifer: "Say no? Do you see what she's done to me? Do I look like a fan?"

Amara continues to try to convince Dean that his life can be better with her. He's not ready to leave the world just yet.

Sam asks if Lucifer is up to working with God and it sounds like he's on board with that. Sam then tells Metatron to hurry up, that Dean can't stall Amara forever. Uh, oh...

Dean admits he's drawn to her and he can't control it, which frightens him.
Fight her, Dean!!! Fight her!!!!! Don't give in!!!!

Oh, crap....Metatron frees Lucifer but he can't zap them out of there because his power is gone! And meanwhile Amara senses something different about Dean, that he's seen God, spoken with him. "You betrayed me." Uh, oh...

Donatello senses that Amara is about to return. Sam picks up Casifer and they head out of there, but Metatron stays behind, telling them he's got this. The 3 take off in the Impala while Metatron puts a blood sigil down. Amara! And the sigil does.....nothing.

Metatron: He meant well. Spare the universe.
Amara: Spare this!

And she creatively kills Metatron. Ooops. :(
At least he tried to do good at the end.

Ooooh! The Back 40 Area! :D
Drive Sam! Drive!!!! But Amara has found them. Seriously? You're worried about hitting her with the car? Ok, Dean probably wouldn't like it. Can't damage Baby. :P

Amara: You really aren't worth sparing. None of you.

And she dumps them and the car inside the bunker. Whoah!
Oh! Chuck saved them!!!
He heals Casifer. Hmmm. This is going to be intense.

The boys say goodbye to Donatello....life has certainly changed for this guy.
Sam tells him to stay tuned that they may need him.
Dean's impressed that Metatron sacrificed himself for the team. He also tells Sam about what Amara's plans are - that she wants Dean to join with her...literally. Forever. "So in other words...adios." :(

Final Thoughts:

Alright, I must after the previous episode done by these writers, I was less than optimistic about this one, but as usual, they proved that they can pull out a winner every now and then. It was very good and a fitting "continuation" from last week.

I especially loved Sam being all awkward and geeky around Chuck and then Dean's emotional, passionate pleas with him to step up and do something. Powerful stuff and beautifully acted by Jensen and Rob. I think Jensen made an excellent choice in making Dean cry during that scene in the bunker. Chuck has a lot to answer for....not that he accepted the blame for any of it, but Dean (and Metatron in the last ep) did try.

I still like Chuck, in all his avoidance of responsibility and taking on his sister. Granted, I think a lot of it is because Rob is so darned likable! He did have an amazing performance in this ep though. I think Chuck means well, but he's also tired. Tired of Amara destroying what he created, tired of his creations doing whatever they wanted despite him, tired of it all. I just hope that Dean and Sam can convince him that allowing Amara to take over isn't the answer. Although it sounds like he expects Dean to stop her? Yikes. That's a lot to ask of a human, even as heroic and strong as Dean, isn't it? Maybe he thinks the brothers will find a one-two punch like what worked with Lucifer in "Swan Song"? One can only hope.

Now the question is...will Lucifer play nice with daddy, or will he be after his own agenda and just pretend to help take down Amara? I'm still not sure he's trustworthy, even after Amara tortured him. Very curious to see how this all goes down. I'm ready for next week! :D

Quotes:

Sam: Okay so um, Chuck. I guess we don't call you that, huh?
Chuck: I prefer it.
Sam: Okay, uh, Chuck it is. I'm sorry you're gonna have to give Dean and me a moment to start to process. We didn't know you were around. I mean we knew about Chuck, but we just didn't know about 'Chuck.' I-I-I was hoping you were around, I prayed and I don't know if they got lost in the-
Dean: Sam.
Sam: Yeah?
Dean: Babbling.
Sam: Okay.

Casifer to Amara: “You want me to beg daddy to come rescue his screw-up of a son? I’m no fan of pops, but he did make all of, you know, everything. And that’s something that you could never do because all you ever wanted was nothing.”

Chuck: You have to understand this about the Darkness. She's relentless, a force beyond human comprehension. It's the only reason I came off the sidelines.
Sam: Must have been great being her brother, huh?
Chuck: It was the worst. Always telling me what to do, making me do what she wanted. I mean you guys know how that works.

Sam: “I know this is a really strange situation and all, but it’s also really amazing. I mean, it’s God. There are so many things I want to ask him, like the planets, why are they round? Or ears, I always thought they were strange.”

Amara: Spoiled brat. I needed solitude and He needed a fan club. So He made all that, and when I complained He stuffed me in a hole for eons with your help.

Donatello: Call me Donatello. I'm named after him.
Dean: The Mutant Ninja Turtle?
Donatello: The Renaissance sculptor.

Dean: Is that my computer?
Chuck: I've never seen so much porn. Not in one sitting.

Donatello: I-I-I guess you know that I was an atheist, until ten minutes ago. Is that an issue?
Chuck: Not from me. I mean I believe in me, but your skepticism is to expected. I did include free will in the kit.

Dean: When you see Amara, you throwing in the towel?
Chuck: Ah, Metatron. Loose lips. You think I'm a dick, what do you care?

Dean: Look you started this. You started all of this. But does that give you the right to end it? You know we're not just some toys you throw away. I think you owe us more than that.
Chuck: If my plan doesn't work, then humans will step up. You, Sam, others that are the chosen will have to find a way. It's why I saved you years ago. You're the firewall between light and darkness.

Amara: I missed you, and the sensations you arouse. I know you feel the same way, so what do we do?
Dean: There can be no us. We should just walk away.

Amara: This place, this world hasn't been especially easy for you. Why not at least consider my offer.
Dean: This world is flawed, I'll give you that. But I am not ready to say goodbye to it yet.
Amara: But one way or another you will. Its inevitable. My brother won't stop me again, because he can't. Dean, give up your smallness, your humanity and become boundless within me.

Dean: You're right. I am drawn to you. And it bothers the hell out of me, because I can't control it.
Amara: Then why fight it? What you're feeling is that I'm the end of your struggle. Something stops you, keeps you from having it all.

Lucifer: Oh, wow. It's one of Dad's favorites. Your ticket finally got punched, huh? It's wacky isn't it? One minute you're nobody, and then 'Shazam' you're Joan of Arc. Let's hope this ends better than that.

Amara: You were kidding with that weren't you?
Metatron: He meant well. Spare the universe.
Amara: Spare this.

Chuck: Occasionally I do answer a prayer... You've changed.
Lucifer: You've changed.
Chuck: Well still. I'm really pretty much the same.

Dean: Still twitchy, huh? Well, you met God, Lucifer and the Darkness. You're gonna need a spa day. That or a pair of hookers.

Sam: So you wanna tell me about it? I mean Amara obviously figured out something was going on and she didn't rip your head off.
Dean: She wants me to be a part of her. Not metaphorically, I'm talking literally. Forever. So in other words, adios.
