First Impressions Review: 11x23 "Alpha And Omega"

Okay, for the record, it took me 4 hours to even watch this episode. I mean, I tried watching it online and right away it took forever to find a link that worked, then it kept stopping and starting. I even had to re-load it once. Then I was right to the last 5 minutes and it stopped - again! Gah!!!!! Finally gave up and did what I should have done in the first place - just download the damn thing and be done with it. *sigh*

Carry on my wayward soooooonnnn!!!! :D

We pick up right where the last ep ended. Sam helps Dean get up and then he checks on Chuck while Dean looks after Cas. Castiel is back!!!!! Amara ripped Lucifer from his body to who knows where.

Chuck is not doing well….dying just as Amara said. “You know when you’re driving and a bug hits your windshield? I’m the bug.”
Rowena and Crowley re-enter the room and tell them all to take a look outside.
Ok, what am I supposed to be seeing??? I see the sun and some clouds. I’m confused….again! *sigh*

Great, so the sun is dying, too. Without it everything on earth will just “waste away” as Cas put it.
So Chuck can still do a few tricks…like snap them all back to the Bunker. But not without collapsing into Sam’s arms. :(
Cas asks what they do now and Dean rushes off to the kitchen for a beer. It’s “Last Call” time as far as he’s concerned. He tells Sam he’ll fight anything, but how are they “supposed to fix the friggin’ sun?”
Good question.

And we’re suddenly in London, England….where a wealthy lady has just arrived home, notices the fading sunlight, and turns on the news about the event where they're telling people not to worry (yeah, right). She gets a phone call from her boss apparently, and….oh, she’s a womanofletters/hunter! And she’s got a whole wall dedicated to the Winchesters….even Castiel & Henry! o.O

Dean wants to go out for more booze “No reason to die sober, huh?”, while Sam’s determined to find a Plan B. Crowley warns Chuck that Rowena is using him & that he’s not calling him dad yet.

So the huntress has a little boy. Hey, that engraved gun is a lot like Dean’s.

Everyone’s drinking away their sorrows and Sam’s all we-have-to-do-something! Go Sam!!! Hee! Crowley called him Samantha! Even Chuck has given up and says putting away Amara now wouldn’t do any good. Once he’s gone the cosmic balance is lost and it’s over.

Sam: “Alright. Well, if we can’t cage her, we have to kill her.”
Crowley: “Bingo.”

I wondered where Cas was…..with Dean, of course. *g*
Great shots in the Impala here, btw. Using those great camera angles they used in “Baby”. :) Are they driving around Riverview??? Kinda looks like it. There’s a lot of roads in there. *iz location geek*
Anyway, Cas says taking on Lucifer like he did was stupid, but Dean says no, that it was more than he or Sam would have done.

Dean: You’re always there. You’re the best friend we’ve ever had. You’re our brother, Cas, I want you to know that.
Castiel: Thank you.

Awwww. :)

Dean gets a call from Sam about a new plan and they head back home.

So the plan is to kill Amara, because with Chuck dying himself that would balance out the universe. Otherwise, with just one of them living, it would be chaos. Chuck’s a little reluctant to give the intel on how to kill his sister, but he eventually opens up - light. Lots and lots of light….like from a thousand suns going supernova. But of course, he’s in no condition to pull off such a feat.

So Cas comes up with the idea of gathering souls, which are the next powerful things they’ve got. Rowena can then build a bomb with them. Heaven is full of souls, but they’ll need more. Dean answers with Waverly Hills Sanitorium because tons of people died there. Crowley’s a little skeptical “This is desperate and stupid.”, but he agrees to raid hell for souls, too.

Amara’s somewhere in a garden and touches some of the flowers which promptly die. She actually looks surprised that she killed them.

The boys are outside the sanitorium (aka Riverview!!!!), wondering if this is going to really work. OMG Jensen doing a Scottish accent like Rowena!!! LOL

EMF time, baby! :) Pretty Jensen profile, too! Yum!
Here are the ghosts! Well, one. The boys prep a room and nothing seems to be happening. Sam goes to piss them off. Heh. Well, something worked ‘cause the ghosts are coming at them from all sides now.
Whoo-hoo! Lots of gun action. Me likie! :) Uh, oh….that one ghost dude is BIG! And he’s strangling Sam!!!! Hurry with the magic word, Dean!!!! Phew! It worked! All the souls were sucked into a rock??? Okay.

Sam: “Go magic word.”
Hee!
Oh…Billie the reaper watched them leave. Hmmmm….

Cas says the angels won’t help. They know God is dying so they’re sealing up heaven and “dying with dignity.”. Peachy. Crowley struck out in hell, too.

Uh, oh…the bunker’s red lights come on. Boys aim their guns. Oh, boy that was hot! I bet it’s Billie….yep! Rowena asks who Billie is.

Dean: “Billie. Reaper. Wants us dead. Tons of fun.”

But seriously, I thought the Bunker was friggin’ warded and all that jazz. Seems now anyone and anything can get in without much fuss at all! Amara, Billie, Lucifer…. This place is not the safe haven it used to be, boys!

Billie wants to know what they’re up to since they’re busting ghosts with the world about to end. Sam tells her their plan and it sounds like she wants in. “A little tip: You want souls, call a reaper.”

Back to Amara in the garden where she meets an elderly lady who is feeding the pigeons and says her son is trying to put her in an old folks home. She hates him…a little.
Old Lady: “You know family…even when you hate them you still love them.”
Amara looks suitably regretful.

Billie summons a couple hundred thousand more souls into the rock, getting them from the veil. Whoah. Ok, Crowley looks a bit too smug saying goodbye to Billie….what’s going on with them??? A little king of hell / reaper romance going on? *g*

So Chuck can find Amara since she’s no longer warded and they need someone to get close to her, someone with a personal connection….and all eyes fall on Dean. Rowena tells him “You won’t carry the bomb. You’ll be the bomb.” Cue the Family Theme!!! OMG tearing up here. :( She tells him how to set it off. I don’t like this idea!!!!!!!

So the souls will be in Dean’s heart - yeah, that’s gotta hurt. Sheesh. Cas asks how he feels, but it’s Sam's reaction that breaks me. This is the end, and he doesn’t want to let Dean go.

Meanwhile, the huntress has landed in the US and is headed for Lebanon, Kansas.

The boys stop at Mary’s grave site and Sam’s all nervous and twitchy. Dean says he can do this, he just has to get close. Love the little wink he gives to Mary’s headstone before he pats Sam’s shoulder and walks away.

OMG and then Sam kisses his fingertips and presses them to the headstone. *dies* Oh, Jared….quit breaking my heart already!

Dean asks Chuck if he’s alright with this and Chuck says he’s not. Amara is his family, he doesn’t want to see her dead, but he understands. Aw, Cas hugging Dean! He offers to come along with Dean, but he asks Cas to take care of Sam afterwards and not let him do anything stupid. Hand me some tissues!

Then Dean goes into his spiel over how he wants his funeral - big - with his ashes left here with his mom’s. Oh, man…the car keys….Sam’s in tears and Dean’s all no-chick flick moments. I love how they can’t even look at each other at first.

Sam: Yeah, you love chick flicks.
Dean: Yeah, you’re right. I do. Come here.

Cue the tears!!!! That was a beautiful brother hug!!!!! :(

Dean says “Let’s do this.” Chuck snaps his fingers and he’s gone….to the garden.

Love the gang driving up to a bar and filing out like it’s a clown car. I don’t think the Impala has ever held that many people. Of course the place is closed, “One little apocalypse and they close up shop. Quitters.”, but that’s not going to stop the king of hell. “Your round, Moose.” Heh.

Amara appears and damn…she knows about the bomb Dean’s carrying. But she says he hasn’t been able to hurt her in the past so why should now be any different. So the sun fading isn’t her doing precisely, it’s because the scales are tipping to darkness, to nothingness. When God is gone she will be, too. Oh, great. So there’s no way to stop this???

Back at the bar they’re watching the news about the dying sun and Crowley soon turns it off. Cas notes how horrible Chuck looks.

Amara says God sent Dean to kill her, but he says this wasn’t Chuck’s idea, that she’s family and he didn’t want any of this.

Nice music choice!
This is a beautiful speech by Dean to Amara. Great acting by Jensen, with him tearing up just a little, talking about how important family is and how you always need them.

Amara: I just wanted to hurt Him. I wanted to make Him pay.
Dean: Yeah, that's revenge. It'll get you out of bed in the morning, and when you get it it'll make you feel great, for about five minutes. I've been there. Me and Sam. We have had our fair share of fights. More than our share. But no matter how bad it got, we always made it right, because we're family. I need him. He needs me, because when everything goes to crap that's all you got, family. And you may be an all powerful being, but I think you're human where it counts. You simply need your brother.
Amara: Just stop.
Dean: You don't want to be alone, not really. I mean hell maybe that's why you wanted me. But deep down you really didn't want me, 'cause I'm not Him. Maybe I can kill you, or maybe I can't. Maybe if I pull this trigger, we all live happily ever after, or maybe we all die bloody, or maybe it doesn't matter. Because maybe there's a different way. So I'm gonna ask you again, put aside the rage, put aside the hate and you tell me. What do you want?

Sam goes to get Chuck some water and….wha??? He’s gone!!!!
Amara snatched him to talk. Well, this is progress, yes?

In the beginning it was just the two of them, they were happy and loved one another, then God had to go and make other things and Amara felt she was being replaced. She hated all his creations and then he locked her away and she just wanted to make him suffer.

Amara: “I thought revenge would make me happy, but I was wrong. What you've made, it's beautiful. It took me a long time to see that. I know we can't go back to the way things were. I don't want to. But I wish, I wish we could just be family again."
Chuck: "I do too.”

They touch hands and the sun gets brighter again!!!!
Sam and the others notice and walk outside and look at the full-powered sun (very dangerous, btw - don't do that!).
Yep, he did it. But what happens to Dean now??? *worries* Sam looks heartbroken. :(

Amara heals Chuck. Awww. They’re going to go away for a little while. But first Chuck pulls the souls from Dean’s chest. Phew! Thank you, Chuck!

Dean: What about us? What about Earth?
Chuck: Earth will be fine. It’s got you and Sam.

The siblings join hands and then…
Amara: Dean, you gave me what I needed most. I wanna do the same for you.

Ok, what does THAT mean???
They form white and black smoke and disappear into the sky.

Sam & Cas go back to the Bunker and they obviously think Dean is dead. Meep. :(
Uh, oh!!! Guess who’s there? The huntress! She sigil-blasts Cas out of there and pulls a gun before Sam can do anything. So she’s Toni Bevell from the London MOL Chapter and she’s here to take Sam in. What??? Apparently the "old men" have had enough of the Winchesters meddling with matters of the world.

Lady Toni: “You’re just a jumped-up Hunter playing with things you don’t understand and doing more harm than good.”

Sam telling her that Dean's dead. *wibbles* But he's not Saaaaaammmm!!!!!
OMG She shot Sam??? O.O
WTH????

Meanwhile, Dean’s wandering in the woods trying to figure out where he is when he hears a woman calling for help.
Holy crap!!! It’s Mary!!!!! Gah!!!!!!!! “Mom?”

Final Thoughts:

Wow! SPN has done it again! What a way to end the season...and lead us into Season 12. Nice that they knew about that in time to set this all up. Thanks CW. *g*

So the boys hatch a Plan B that looks like it's going to be Dean's ultimate swan song (see what I did there? *g*) and it turns out not to be at all! But I love that they went through all the emotions of the potential loss, which is something Jensen brought up at JibCon last weekend. We got all the tearful, angsty brothers and a beautiful hug - also reminiscent of the hug Jensen gave Jared at JibCon. *glees* :D

So happy that Castiel is back and healthy (I'm assuming 'cause God healed him) and Dean understood why he said yes to Lucifer possessing him and it's all good.

It was nice to see enemies working together with the boys (Rowena and Crowley) and nobody killed one another! Any chance of this lasting into Season 12? Yes? No? Maybe? Yeah, probably not. :P

Alright, so all that Amara & Chuck needed was to be reminded that they're family and they love one another and the past is the past and of course, Dean was the one to do that. Goodness knows he's had issues with his family (Cas included) and has forgiven them. And after all, Chuck did tell him he was the firewall between the light and the darkness. But...yes, there's a but. One has to wonder what the big build up of Dean's attraction to Amara was even done for. It wasn't a factor in the final showdown at all and here it was a huge plot device for the entire season! Yeah, I think that one's gonna bug me for a while.

As for Sam....what the hell??? He thinks Dean is dead and he comes home to find a strange chick in the Bunker! Who sends Cas away, and pulls a gun on Sam! And why on Earth would Sam keep walking towards her and go "I know you're not going to pull that trigger." SAM! You know nothing about this woman!!! Why would you provoke her like that??? Totally a Dean move, btw. And why did she shoot him? I mean he didn't even pull his gun (which I'm sure he's wearing because he's a Winchester). What threat was he to her besides walking towards her? Gah!!!!

Alright, secretly I'm hoping she just fired off a warning shot past Sam and it'll be revealed as such in the Season 12 premiere. 'Cause we really don't need Sam getting shot again, alright show? *hopes*

Gotta admit, initially I was really annoyed by the Lady Toni stuff in the ep because it was taking away from the main plot, but...I'll give show credit, they kept her to the bare minimum and in the end it made perfect sense. So bravo to them on that part. :)

And OMG - I did initially think after Amara's line about doing something for Dean that she would bring John and Mary back and well...I was half right! :D Yeah, it would've been super sweet to have JDM back on the show, but I think we all realistically know that's not gonna happen. *le sigh* Good on show for keeping it secret that Sam Smith was in the ep! I had no clue and her credit didn't appear until the end. Awesome!!! So what happens now? Mom's back in the boys' lives? Joins in the hunting? Helps Dean go save Sam from Toni's clutches?

So many questions!!!
Can't wait for Season 12! :D

Quotes

Sam: Are you, uh. How do you feel?
Chuck: You know when you're driving and bug hits your windshield? I'm the bug.

Rowena: So that was a gun in your pocket.

Dean: Look man, if you got something for me to punch, shoot or kill let me know and I'll do it. I'll do it 'til I die. But how are we supposed to fix the frickin' sun?

Dean: You know what this isn't gonna be enough. I better make a run, no reason to die sober. You wanna?
Sam: No!

Dean: “You do help, Cas. Sometimes me and Sam got so much going on and we forget about everyone else."
Cas: “Well, you do live exciting lives."
Dean: “Yeah, that’s one word for it."

Dean: “You’re always there. You’re the best friend we’ve ever had. You’re our brother, Cas, I want you to know that.”

Crowley: She's using you. It's what she does. Finds someone with power, cozies up, digs the claws in.
Chuck: Yeah, well I'm not helping anyone out right now, obviously. She's been nice.
Crowley: For now.
Chuck: Now's pretty much all we got.
Crowley: Whatever. I'm not calling you 'dad.'

Rowena: Now Fergus was bright. Walked before his first birthday. But he hated pants. He hated them. He'd run around the village, his wee banger just flapping in the breeze.
Chuck: Adam and Eve were the same way.

Dean: Wait so now you wanna kill the Darkness? And what you're cool with this? Because last time.
Sam: Chuck's dying... No offense God.
Chuck: Yeah. I'm dying.

Crowley: This is desperate. And stupid.
Dean: Well desperate and stupid is all we got right now.

Sam: Dean, you know you don't have to do this.
Dean: Of course I do. I just have to get close. I can do that, okay. I can do that.
Sam: You know if this works. That bomb goes off...

Dean: Okay look. I want a big funeral, alright? I'm talking epic, okay? Open bar, choir, Sabbath cover band and Gary Busey reading the eulogy.
Sam: Done.
Dean: And for my ashes, I like it here. Yeah. You know as far as eternal resting places go.

Dean: Come on you know the drill. No chick flick moments, come on.
Sam: Yeah, you love chick flicks.
Dean: Yeah, you're right I do. Come here.

Amara: When God's gone, the universe, everything will cease to exist. Including me.

Amara: My brother betrayed me, he locked me up for billions of years. He sent you to execute me.
Dean: No, no, no. He zapped me here, yes. But he didn't want this. This wasn't his idea, you're family. He doesn't want you dead, he doesn't want any of this.

Amara: I just wanted to hurt Him. I wanted to make Him pay.
Dean: Yeah, that's revenge. It'll get you out of bed in the morning, and when you get it it'll make you feel great, for about five minutes. I've been there. Me and Sam. So I'm gonna ask you again, put aside the rage, put aside the hate and you tell me. What do you want?

Amara: In the beginning. It was just you and me, we were family. I loved you and I thought... I knew that you loved me.
Chuck: I did. I do.
Amara: But then you went and made all these other things. I hated them. I hated you for needing something else, something that wasn't me. And then you locked me away and all I could think about was making you suffer.
Chuck: You had your reasons.
Amara: I did and I thought revenge would make me happy. I was wrong. What you've made, it's beautiful. It took me a long time to see that. I know we can't go back to the way things were. I don't want to. But I wish, I wish we could just be family again.
Chuck: I do too.

Dean: What about us? What about Earth?
Chuck: Earth will be fine. It's got you and Sam.

Amara: Dean. You gave me what I needed most. I want to do the same for you.
