First Impressions Review: 12x22 "Who We Are"
Sorry, but even though I watched the two final episodes early on the East Coast feed (for once!) I didn't do my rewatch until after midnight. So I'm going to have to do reviews of the episodes separately. And the review of the season finale will be posted late Friday.

For the record, I’m happy to say that I was mostly right with my predictions with this ep and the season finale, based on the 2in1 promo last week! :D

So Mary’s still on her hunter killing spree…and Jody’s on her list!!!!

The boys are trapped in the bunker with Toni, so they’re trying to figure a way out. Turns out there’s a manual over-ride switch for the system, but it’s outside of the bunker’s walls. Sam finds a spell, but it needs virgin blood, but they decide to fake it and purify their own blood to use. It seems to work….and then not. Day two and Dean says they tried brains so it’s time for brawn. There’s a thin wall in the bunker….break through and climb up to the over-ride switch. But it’s a cement wall and they’re running out of air. But we get sweaty, exhausted boys finally collapsing and having a sweet heart-to-heart scene! :) Dean admitting he thought they had it all since they saved the world and got mom and Cas back. Sam feeling guilty for falling for the BMOL lies because he thought following them was easier than leading. The Butch & Sundance Blaze of Glory bit was really sweet, too.

And then Dean gets to use the Grenade Launcher!!!!!! :D
Hot Damn! He’s so darned gleeful. And Toni calling them lunatics. Heh. Yeah, lunatics with a killer grenade launcher that's been sitting around waiting to be used!
But after the blast, Dean is nowhere to be found!
Then the lights and the air come back on and a limping Dean comes back into the Bunker. “Hey, lunatic.” Ow, that’s one nasty looking knee. :(

Mary arrives at Jody’s house. Don’t let her in Jody!!!!!!

Ah, this is one of my favorite all-time locations! Been here several times. :D
The boys are checking phones that still have power to them. Thank goodness Garth is still alive and Dean warns him! Somehow Sam feels Jody’s in danger so off they go.

They arrive to find the place a mess, Jody sporting an ice pack to her cheek, and Mary tied to a chair. Alex tends to Dean’s knee while Mary tells Jody she can have Dean for a son. Ouch. Sam brings in Toni and suddenly she’s backing off of her promise to reverse the brainwashing. It can’t be done and she only told them that to save her life. Typical! Time to kill her! But…maybe not.

Toni: This is not going to stop. Soon enough they’ll find out you’re alive and then, well if you want my advice. Run.
Dean: We’re not running.
Toni: Well then you die.
Sam: Or…
Toni: Or what?
Sam: Or we fight.

So they’ve called in some hunters to help…including Walt & Roy! Who could’ve seen that one coming??? The boys have no hard feelings though.

Love this speech Sam gives! I’ll follow you, Sam!!!! Jared is so sweating during this scene, but he did an amazing job. Sam’s ready to be a leader and it’s time to strike back against the BMOL. “We go in fast and hard and we fight. And we beat them down until they give up or until they’re dead.”

And then Sam learns that Dean isn’t coming along with his messed up leg.

Sam: I’ll take a jacked up Dean Winchester over any 10 hunters any day.
Dean: Yeah, I saw you. You’re ready for this. You show those sons-of-bitches who’s boss.

Dean’s going to bring Mary back….somehow.
We also get a sweet little goodbye scene between Alex and Jody….they mentioned Donna!!!!! And we get “Kick it in the ass!” :D

Finally the boys HUG!!!!!! Geez, it’s only been the entire, friggin’ season without one hug. Grrrrrrrrr.
So sweet to see this one though. I kept going Hug! Hug! Hug! at the screen.
And then Bitch and Jerk on top of that! *loves* :D
So perfect! Thank you show!!!!!

Back at BMOL headquarters….they’re planning for the final killing wave of the hunters. This time there’s to be no family, bystanders, or witnesses. Ketch gets nervous about Mary’s location and finds out she’s in Lebanon, Kansas….at the bunker. Uh, oh….

Toni’s hoping that Dean will show her some mercy after they’re done doing the procedure to get Mary back. She’s like to see her son again and all she asks is for a head start. She hooks Mary and Dean up with electrodes, injects them with a sedative, and off we go…
Dean is in his old home….and soon finds baby Sammy in a crib and Mary in the kitchen, with a younger version of himself! Dean tries to talk to Mary, but he isn’t getting through.

The hunters storm the BMOL compound! How come this doesn’t look like the same place we were shown before??? Anyway, it’s a kick-ass scene. In fact, the whole take down of the compound is outstanding and Jody is one bad-ass gal! Woot!!!!!!

Now the show jumps back and forth here between Sam and Dean so I’m just going to stick with Dean because Jensen seriously knocks this out of the park! If only this man could win an Emmy!!!!

Dean realizes Mary is choosing to stay in this safe environment of the past. She’s ignoring him. Then she tells little Dean that she’ll always keep him safe. Dean: “I hate you.”

I love this scene so much! It finally gives Dean a chance to vent his anger and hurt and love to his mom. The pain of being left alone with a distraught father. And I love how he mentions about being a mother and father to Sam, not just a brother. It’s something that’s always been explored in fan fiction, but the show has never even mentioned it until now.

It’s interesting how in the mind scene Dean is the one in tears, but inside the Bunker we see Mary is the one with tear streaks on her face.

Dean: I hate you... You lied to me. I was a kid. You promised you'd keep me safe, and then you make a deal with Azazel. Yeah, it saved Dad's life, but I'll tell you something else that happened, because on November 2, 1983 old Yellow-Eyes came waltzing into Sammy's room because of your deal. You left us. Alone. Because Dad was just a shell. His perfect wife, gone. Our perfect Mom, the perfect family, it was gone. And I-I had to be more than just a brother. I had to be a father, and I had to be a mother. To keep him safe. And that wasn't fair. And I couldn't do it. And you wanna know what that was like? They killed the girl that he loved, he got possessed by Lucifer. They tortured him in Hell and he lost his soul. His soul. All because of you. All of it was because of you... I hate you. I hate you, and I love you. 'Cause I can't-I can't help it, you're my Mom. And I understand. Because I have made deals to save the ones I love, more than once. I forgive you. I forgive you. For all of it. Everything. On the other side of this, we can start over, okay? You, me, Sam. We can get it right this time. But I need you to fight, right now. I need you to fight. I need-I need you to look at me, I need you to really look at me and see me. Mom, I need you to see me. Please.

Dean finally gets Mary to look at him and he’s broken through her walls. Then it’s all ripped away….by Ketch!!!! He’s in the bunker! And he killed Toni. Fight Time!!!!! OMG And Dean’s got the injured leg. Love when he flips Ketch over onto the table! Just a brutal, awesome fight scene. But finally Ketch pulls a gun on Dean and Dean thinks it’s over….but Mary shoots Ketch in the shoulder! Yeah! Dean stands beside his mom as Ketch tells them that they’re both killers and Dean proudly says yes, they are before Mary shoots Ketch dead. Goodbye, freaky weirdo guy! LOL Sorry, but Ketch has been the biggest mystery this entire season. Awesome actor, but geez…what was up with this guy???

Back at the compound and Dr. Hess is on the phone with the head office and trying to find an escape route, but they can’t extract her now. Then Sam, Jody, and Walt storm in…she can’t even get Sam’s name right? I love sassy, smart Sam here! Hess tries to sway him into sparing her life….shows him photos of Lucifer….proof that he’s back on Earth thanks to Crowley, who she says is dead. But they can’t find Lucifer’s baby alone….they need the BMOL. Yeah, um….no. And Jody gets a great head shot on Hess! Sweet!!!! Then they blow up the compound. I hope you got your guns back, Sam!

Back at the Bunker and we get another beautiful scene!
Dean’s found some old painkillers….boy does he need them, too. Poor guy! Owie. :(
Mary’s cleaning up, but Dean says she doesn’t need to do that.

Mary: This...all of this is because of me.
Dean: It's gonna be okay.
Mary: It's not okay. Since I've been back, I know I've been distant. Cold even. Leaving you, working with them. I was trying to make things right, just from a distance. Because, being here with you, was too hard. Seeing what I'd done, to you and to Sam. I-
Dean: Mom, what you did. The deal. Everything that's happened since has made us who we are, we kick ass. We save the world.
Mary: And Sam? I'm scared, what if he can't forgive me.
Sam: Mom. You don't have to be scared of me.

Awww....group hug!!!! That got to me. I was in tears. It took me a bit to figure out why, but then I realized that my mom, dad, and I used to do that all the time. Whenever the reason arose...we'd say "Group hug!" and we would hug and it was so special. I can't believe I forgot about that. Thank you show, for reminding me...and giving us such a beautiful moment with the Winchesters. ♥

Final Thoughts:

This was a spectacular episode! Thank you Robert Berens!!!
But why, oh why did we have to wait the entire season to have some hugs between the brothers? *sigh*

I loved how Sam stepped up into the leadership roll and Dean was totally supportive and okay with it and even proud. Because a lot of what Sam said in his speech to the hunters are things Dean has said in the past, to Sam. He's been that inspiration, that motivation, that reminder to keep going, keep fighting the good fight and now Sam's able to take up the charge. It's great to see. Jared did an amazing job with this scene!

But of course, Dean had his own battles to fight - saving Mary and fighting with Ketch. Such a beautifully written and acted scene between Jensen and Samantha and I love the way it was shot. That medium shot with both of them in focus as Dean talks to Mary and she refuses to look at him. Great to see his words and emotions breaking through to her. Jensen with all the tears and emotion! He totally killed it as only he can.

Poor Dean though...he really went through the ringer this ep...(the last one, too). In an explosion that tore apart his knee, emotionally struggling to save his mom, getting beat up by Ketch. Owie. He needed some hugs! *volunteers*

So, so happy that not only is Garth safe but Jody and Alex are alive and well! Woot!!!!
On the flip side...thank goodness Ketch, Toni, and that awful Dr. Hess are dead!
But one has to wonder...the higher-ups of the BMOL are still alive and well back in merry old England. Will they give up their attempt to overtake the US or will they launch another attack? Have we really seen the last of them???

Okay, I think I've thought of everything in this episode. It's kinda tough not mixing in things from the finale since they were shown together. But that review will be up later.

Quotes:

Dean: You know what, long ago I thought we had it made. We saved the world, we got Cas back, we got Mom back. I mean it wasn't perfect. But, still we had 'em. But, now...
Sam: Now, they're all gone. And Mom, what they did to her. I just fell for their company line, man. I-I saw what they were doing and I-and I thought, hunters on that scale working together, how much good we can do. And once I was in it, I just followed, 'cause it was easy... Easier.
Dean: Easier than what?
Sam: Easier than leading.

Sam: Is this how you pictured it? The end?
Dean: You know it's not. I always thought we'd go out like Butch and Sundance style. Blaze of glory.

Sam: So wait a second, we're just gonna...
Dean: Straight Shawshank this bitch.

Dean: Yup. Big, beautiful and dumb. I have had this thing for so long, been waiting for the perfect moment to use it.

Lady Bevell: You're lunatics. Action moving loving, cheese burger eating, moronic American lunatics.

Dean: Okay, beautiful. Yippee ki-yay mother-

Sam: Of course yeah, so my brother and I we, uh. No you know what. I called you here, because people, um, our people are being slaughtered and we're next. The British Men of Letters, they came here because they thought they could do out job better than we could. And they helped us with their flashy gear and their tech, most of you had the good sense to turn them down. They said they wanted the same thing we wanted, you know? A world free of monsters. That's not what they really wanted. They want control, they wanna live in a world where they can sit in some office and decide who gets to live and who gets to die. And they've killed people, they've killed innocent people, just because they got in the way. They think the ends justify the means, but we know better. We know hunting isn't just about killing. It's about doing what's right, even when it's hard. So we go by our gut, right? We play by our own rules. And that scares them, that's why they want us dead, because we're the one thing they can't control.
Roy: So what do you want from us?
Sam: I want you to follow me. Take the fight to them, to hit them before they hit us. We go in fast and hard and we fight. And we beat them down until they give up or until they're dead. Look they are well trained and well armed, some of us might not make it back. But we will win, we will take down the bad guys, because that's what we do. They're scared of us, yeah, good. They should be.

Dean: Oh, no. I'm not going. My leg busted up the way it is, I'm no good in a fight.
Sam: I'll take a jacked up Dean Winchester over any ten other hunters any day.
Dean: I saw you. You're ready for this. You show those sons of bitches who's boss.
Sam: What about you. What are you gonna do?
Dean: I'm gonna save Mom. Look if she's in there. If our real Mom is in there somewhere, then I'm gonna try and find her, bring her back.

Dean: You come back.
Sam: Promise.
Dean: Bitch.
Sam: Jerk.

Alone. Mom, I need you to see me. Please.

Mr. Ketch: Mary? I knew you were a killer. You both are.
Dean: You're right.

Dr. Hess: Lucifer is back. Yes Sam, all thanks to your good friend Crowley. Not that it did him much good, Crowley's dead. And the Devil is out looking for it's son, following it's mother's footsteps, tracking her and your friend the angel. If Lucifer gets his hands on that child, they'll be unstoppable. You can't face that alone, you need us.
BMOL Elder: Listen to her boy.
Sam: Pass.

Mary: It's not okay. Since I've been back, I know I've been distant. Cold even. Leaving you, working with them. I was trying to make things right, just from a distance. Because, being here with you, was too hard. Seeing what I'd done, to you and to Sam. I-

Mary: And Sam? I'm scared, what if he can't forgive me.
Sam: Mom. You don't have to be scared of me.

One of the best episodes. Where were the writers all along this season? I'm just glad they finally gave us something AWESOME to end the season with.
