First Impressions Review: 13x04 "The Big Empty"
Took over 24 hours, but I finally got to watch the episode! Kept hearing it was a good one on Twitter (while trying to dodge spoilers) and it didn't disappoint. :)

Ah, murderous ghost in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dean's found the Wisconsin case and Sam says great-let's-go...and take Jack with us.
Dean: Uh, hell no. Adventures and babysitting the Antichrist? No thank you.
Sam says they can't keep the kid locked up but Dean's all for that because it means he's not out in the world doing who knows what.
Dean again points out that mom's dead, that Lucifer ripped out her heart and it's time to move on.
Sam: So you're saying you want to move on...from mom.
Dean deflects by saying he just wants to hunt. Good on Sam for not letting Dean get away with that. He reiterates that Jack is a good kid and pleads with Dean to let him come along...for him. Heh. Turn on the puppy eyes!!!!
Btw, the guys look so handsome in these great close-up shots! *guh*

Sam goes to Jack's room and finds the kid watching Clone Wars. Heh. Sadly, today's Star Wars references go right over my head 'cause I haven't seen the newer movies. *le sigh* Someday!!!
Sam asks if Jack wants to come along on the hunt and the kid says no! But we soon uncover it's because he overheard Sam & Dean arguing in the previous episode and he thinks Sam just wants to use him as a "interdimensional can opener". Sam explains what happened with the door to the alternate universe and that their mom is now trapped there, but reassures Jack that if he can't open the door again that it's alright, he still cares about him. Jack's worried about Dean wanting to kill him, but Sam says that won't happen. Dean respects effort, so he encourages Jack to come along and "be the good guys".

OMG the shots in this ep are BEAUTIFUL! Well, John Badham directed, so it makes sense. *happy sigh* :D
The boys explain the basics of ghosts and revenants to Jack, then leave him in the car while they go talk to the witness. Yeah, she's a little iffy on the supernatural aspect. Hmmmm. Ooops! Jack's on the loose! Inside the victim's house! Poor Sam having to run interference for Jack from Dean's bristling attitude. He shows Jack the EMF meter...which shows no sign of a ghost...so it's a revenant. We're off to the cemetery to dig up the dead wife...

Where Dean immediately orders Jack to start digging. Sam doesn't like Dean being like dad with the orders. But the wife's body is in the coffin so...they're back to ghost. As they burn the body, Jack wonders if his mom could be a ghost and Sam answers no, that they burned her. Dean: What gets burned...stays dead.
Anyone else having flashbacks to Dean's line from Season 2: "What's dead should stay dead."???? *g*

Cas all alone in the big empty.

Woman breaks down, her tire is flat and suddenly there's a little boy in the backseat...who attacks her! Gah!
Boys at the crime scene and Jack's been sequestered to the Impala again. The woman was killed by her son who died in 1996. Dean: So we've got 2 ghosts in 2 days and no EMF.

Back to Cas! Whoah! WTH?? Something is rising out of the...darkness.

Okay, I did see this Madison Police Dept. set when I was in the area back in August...a whole day before they filmed. *sigh* All I saw was a couple of crew guys setting things up. Oh, well...at least I know where the location is now. ;)
Dean has yet again, put Jack to work...on a food run. He complains to Sam that the kid keeps looking at him and Sam says it's because Jack wants him to like him. Turns out both victims were seeing the same grief counselor and she had them keep journals of their progress. Dean, is skeptical, calling shrinks "snake oil for the mind". Sam answers with, "Or, how healthy people deal." So Dean is thinking the grief counselor is a medium, so they need to check her out...

Heh. So they all go in...for counseling. This outta be good. *g*
Hee! Jack's so friendly! And speaking when he shouldn't according to Dean, who gives him a stern order before they go in to speak to the counselor...about their dead mom. Mia sees through Dean's attitude about shrinks right away. And pretty soon we're off and running on how Sam & Dean are dealing with Mary's situation...

Sam: My brother, he's not processing his grief.
Dean: Really? No, I'm good with death, closure, the whole freakin' bottle of Jack.
Sam: Are you?
Dean: Yeah, because I know that mom's dead. And I know that she's not coming back.
Sam: Okay, I hear what you're saying, I just wish...
Mia: You wish he'd be more open to therapy.
Sam: Sure, exactly.
Dean: Alright, this is a safe place, right doc? Okay, my brother's delusional.
Sam: Dean.
Dean: You said you wanted to give this a shot, right? Here we go. He won't even admit that Mom's dead, won't even admit it. Because if he admits it then it's real, and if it's real then he has to deal with it, and he can't handle that.
Sam: Right because this is so easy for you, huh?
Dean: No, it's not easy!
Sam: But at least you had a relationship with Mom, I mean, who would she always call? Who did she look to for anything? You had something with her I never had, and now I'm just supposed to accept that I never will have it!?

Powerful scene for the boys. Hey, at least it gave them a chance to talk it out. Remember back in earlier seasons when they weren't talking? Progress! :D

While getting some water Sam spies a blood trail upstairs! He finds a dead body in the bathroom tub. Ew!

Mia can see Jack is terrified of Dean and she's not buying Dean's excuses.
Mia: You're angry, Dean.
Dean: And?
Mia: And if you don't wanna do anything about it? That's your business, but you're aiming it at everyone in your life.

Just then Sam bursts in gun drawn declaring that she's a shapeshifter. Love the shot of the boys with their guns pointed at the doc. She admits that she's a shapeshifter, but she was helping people, not killing. She turned into her patient's lost loved ones so they could say goodbye. She knows nothing of the 2 deaths and has an alibi for the one.

Back to the big empty and Cas...
He soon finds....himself, except it's a being that just looks like him but certainly doesn't sound like him. Apparently it's Emptiness itself?

Castiel: What is this place?
Cosmic Entity: Oh yes, excellent question. You see, before God and Amara, creation, destruction, Heaven, Hell, your precious little Earth... What was there?
Castiel: Nothing.
Cosmic Entity: Yes, that's right. Nothing. Nothing but Empty, and you are soaking in it. Angels and demons, you all come here when you die.
Castiel: Every angel that ever died is here?
Cosmic Entity: Yes. Sleeping an endless peaceful sleep, you know I -- I was sleeping too. Hey, uh, since we're pals, there's something I gotta know, I gotta ask. Hmm, why are you awake? 'Cause fun fact, in all of forever, nothing ever wakes up here. I mean ever, ever. And second fun fact, when you woke up, I woke up and I don't like being awake, so what's up smart guy?
Castiel: I don't know.
Cosmic Entity: Well, think!
Castiel: The Winchesters. Sam & Dean, they must have made a deal.
Cosmic Entity: No, no, no. Not with me and I'm the only one who has any pull here. Not heaven, not hell, not DOD himself so think harder. Rack that perky little brain of yours.
Castiel: Stay away from me!
Cosmic Entity: Okay fine, I'll rack it for you.

Ouch! Poor Cas! Btw, good on Misha for this new characterization.

Dean has checked Mia's alibi and it's good. Love when they both raise their guns in unison! :D
Mia thinks she knows who's doing the killing...another shifter, Buddy, who liked hurting people, including her. Dean & Jack (with Dean's reluctance) go to check out Tom (aka Buddy's new body), who works for Mia.

Gah!!! I know where this place is! It's rare they give us such a long look like that. Love, love, love that this was shot at twilight! Beautiful! :D
Dean tells Jack to stay in the car. *sigh* Jack confesses that Sam told him about their mom and he wants to help, but Dean just says that Sam's plans don't always work out and takes off towards the house.

We see Sam take a call from Dean...Tom is clear. Sam is looking through Mia's security camera footage to see if anyone's eyes flare. Did you see Director, John Badham, coming up the stairs? *g*
Oh! It's the dude Jack said hi to!

So this Cosmic Entity (CE) read Cas's brain..oh, and he just wants Cas to go back to sleep 'cause he's really annoying him. lol
Instead, Cas asks to be sent back to Earth. CE tells him he knows all about him and there's nothing back there for him...and then shows him, the painful way. Geez. :(

Dean & Jack return to Mia's to find out Sam's taken off after Buddy on his own. Dean is not happy and starts calling Sam while Jack goes off to talk with Mia. Aw, he asks to see his mom...just one time. This is a sweet scene.

Jack: Sam thinks you were right, that I'm good. He wants me to believe it, and I wanna believe it too. It's just I -- I've hurt people. I didn't mean to, it was an accident, and I know I should feel bad, and I say I feel bad. But most of the time, I mostly -- I don't feel anything. And that's why I think maybe -- maybe I'm a monster.
Mia / Kelly: Jack, it doesn't matter what you are, it matters what you do. And even monsters can do good in this world.
Jack: You really believe that?
Mia / Kelly: I have to. I have to.

So...Jack doesn't feel anything - kinda soulless in that sense. :(

Meanwhile, Dean wasn't getting through to Sam on the phone....except we see Sam call him back and say it wasn't that guy either. And then we see...real Dean unconscious on the floor!!!! Gah!!!!! It's the shapeshifter as Dean!!!!

Shapeshifter!Dean then knocks Jack out and pulls off his skin to reveal Buddy underneath. Ew!
And I KNEW this bit from the Season 12 promo was of a shapeshifter and people tried to tell me it was just Dean having a nightmare. Nooooooooo!!!! I was right! Ha! :P

Back in the Empty...Cas tries a different tactic, threatening to stay awake to torment and fight the CE for all eternity if he doesn't send him back to Earth.

Dean is cuffed to the fireplace (why isn't Jack cuffed? maybe 'cause Dean only had one set on him?) and once Jack comes to, tells him to break the cuffs. Meanwhile, Buddy is tormenting Mia and says either she kills Dean and Jack or he'll kill her with Dean's gun with silver bullets. She says to shoot her. Go Mia!!!
Uh, oh...Sam's back. Mia tries to stop Buddy from shooting Sam and Dean yells out a warning just in time for Sam to hear it as he comes in the door. Jack manages to use his powers to stop Buddy and even deflects the bullet headed right for Sam into the wall instead! Then Sam shoots Buddy dead. Phew! Too bad Dean was unconscious for all of the action.

So...what happens to Mia? It looks like she was going to stop counseling people. And honestly, I'm surprised angry!Dean didn't want to just kill her, too. Goodness knows he's killed other monsters simply for existing. Curious how that never came up this time.

Back at the Bunker's kitchen and it's time for Dean and Jack to have a heart to heart...
Aw, he even opened a beer for Jack. :)
Ooops...nope, the beer is for Sam...but he did tell Jack he did good, which made the kid smile. Awwwww. :)

Dean admits that Jack tries to do good and he saved their lives. And he apologizes to Sam for what he said back at their therapy session at Mia's. :)

Sam: What if you're right, about Mom? What if she is dead and I'm just in denial?
Dean: Don't say that.
Sam: What? you've been wanting me to admit that since it happened.
Dean: I know I have, don't say that. I need you to keep the faith, for both of us. Because right now -- right now I don't believe in a damn thing.

Lovely, lovely scene between the brothers. They really are 2 halves of a whole. Dean needs Sam to believe because he can't right now.

Blackberries...Cas!!!!! He's baaaaack!!!!!! :D

Final Thoughts

We've got another great episode for Season 13! Feeling much more positive about the direction this season is going as opposed to Season 12's mess.

The boys are talking, Dean is showing signs of accepting Jack, and Cas is on his way back!
But...who is is thinking this Cas is going to be a fresh, Season 4 version? It was pointed out online that he's wearing Cas's original coat and tie so...this could be very interesting.

So happy the boys are airing out their feelings to one another. And thank you, show, for finally having Sam confess that he didn't have a relationship with his mom like Dean did! This is why a lot of how Sam reacted to things about Mary in Season 12 made sense to me. He didn't get upset when she took off because you can't miss what you never really had. Dean did have her...for 4 years! So it made sense that Dean was more devastated by her leaving. But I kept hearing people in the fandom complaining that the writers weren't showing Sam's feelings about Mary, about his loss of her. Well, now you've got it. Sure, he misses her now...because he's worried he'll never have the connection with her that Dean did/does. /soapbox

I'm glad Jack got some kind of closure with his mom and it was sweet to see them together, even if it wasn't really Kelly. Hopefully Dean is showing some signs of real acceptance of Jack. At least where he won't be ordering him around or to do things just so he doesn't have to look at the kid anymore.

So I'll give this ep a solid A-.
Bring on the next one!

Quotes

Dean: So what, you ready to ditch Damien? So, what do you wanna do, leave him in a ring of holy oil with some Netflix and a frozen pizza?

Dean: So, what? Does this mean your plan for bringing Mom back isn't working? Because I'll say it again. Mom's dead, Sam. Lucifer ripped out her freakin' heart. Now the sooner you can wrap your head around that, the sooner we can all move on.
Sam: So you're saying you want to move on from Mom?
Dean: Right now I wanna kill some dead guy's dead wife.

Sam: Jack? Hey. Clone Wars.
Jack: The computer said I'd like it. I do like Ashoka, kinda hate Anakin.
Sam: Uh, that's probably for the best... Never mind.

Jack: “You kill monsters because you’re the good guys.”

Sam: Jack, when you were born, it ripped a hole in reality. Like a -- like a door from this world to another, to a really bad, bad place. So -- so Dean and Cas and I, we closed that door. But our mom, Mary, she's trapped on the other side. If we can get your powers back, maybe we can open the door back up, maybe...
Jack: You wanna save her.
Sam: Yeah. Yeah I do. But, if this doesn't work, if that can't happen, that's okay. Because I do care about you, but I should have told you. I'm sorry, it's a lot.
Jack: Dean can't even look at me. He wants to kill me.
Sam: I won't let that happen. Listen, there's one thing Dean respects, that's effort. So come along, help us out. Let's go be the good guys.

Sam: Dean, what's up with all the orders, you're starting to sound like Dad.
Dean: Is that a bad thing?
Sam: You're saying his drill sergeant act worked with you, but it didn't with me. And that's not the way we're gonna get through to Jack.
Dean: Look, you wanted the kid here, he's here. Alright? But I'm not gonna hold his hand and tuck him in at night, pass. I'm not gonna be his mother and neither are you. And the kid can dig, so I give him that.

Sam: Dean he's not our intern, I told you to keep an eye on him.
Dean: I can see him. He keeps staring at me.

Sam: Alright I don't get it. I mean a ghost that won't show up on EMF? Doesn't make any sense.
Dean: Yeah, well, what does these days? You know, I mean we got portals to apocalyptic words, we've got shapeshifting demons. Dealing with a whole new set of tiddlywinks. I say we just, do what we do.

Dean: Alright, well, Mom was great. Now she's dead. What's the deal with catharsis?

Dean: He won't even admit that Mom's dead, won't even admit it. Because if he admits it then it's real, and if it's real then he has to deal with it, and he can't handle that.
Sam: Right because this is so easy for you, huh?
Dean: It's not easy.
Sam: But at least you had a relationship with Mom, I mean, who would she always call? Who did she look to for anything? You had something with her I never had, and now I'm just supposed to accept that I never will have it!?

Castiel: What are you?
Cosmic Entity: Oh, I'm just your friendly neighborhood cosmic entity.

Castiel: Why do you look like me?
Cosmic Entity: Oh yes. Yes, yes, yes. I show up in my real form and you freak out, rip out your own eyes, etc... that would be embarrassing for the both of us.

Jack: Sam thinks you were right, that I'm good. He wants me to believe it, and I wanna believe it too. It's just I -- I've hurt people. I didn't mean to, it was an accident, and I know I should feel bad, and I say I feel bad. But most of the time, I mostly -- I don't feel anything. And that's why I think maybe -- maybe I'm a monster.
Mia / Kelly: Jack, it doesn't matter what you are, it matters what you do. And even monsters can do good in this world.
Jack: You really believe that?
Mia / Kelly: I have to. I have to.

Cosmic Entity: I have tip-toed through all your tulips, your memories, your little feelings. Yes. I know what you hate, I know who you love, what you fear. There is nothing for you back there. No. Here, let me show you.

Mia: You're -- you're a...
Buddy: What? A monster? Well, so are you, and it's about time you embraced that. So I'm not gonna kill those boys, you are. You end them, or you die. Courtesy of Tweedledee's silver bullets.

Dean: You did good today, Jack.
