First Impressions Review: 13x05 "Advanced Thanatology"
Finally got the episode to watch and...it was as good as I was anticipating. :)

Two teenage boys checking out an abandoned hospital at night. Is this "Asylum" meets "Ghostfacers"?
The one kid is definitely more enthusiastic than the other. Hey, isn't this a house they used before? I swear we've seen that stained glass window before.
How come those beds were nice and neat and orderly when everything else is in disarray?
Yeah, I wouldn't take one of those creepy masks if I were you...
Uh, oh...Whoah! Poor Evan is getting his brains drilled out by the ghost doctor while the other kid runs away.

Dean likes strawberry jelly on his PB&J. Good to know. ;)
Sam offers him a beer for breakfast? Even Dean thinks that's weird.
He's found the case w/the missing teen, Evan, and his friend Shawn found on the side of the road muttering about monsters. Aw, Sam likes Red Sonja & Beastmaster! I loved those movies as a kid. *g* The ferrets!!!! Kodo and Podo, wasn't it? Something like that.
They'll put up some extra warding and leave Jack at home. Okay...you know Dean is adjusting his take on Jack because he easily goes along with this. Good sign.

The boys go off to talk to Shawn, but his mom said he won't talk because he's so traumatized.
Ah, I like how Dean goes to talk to him and the kid is drawing those freaky masks...shades of "Dead In The Water" anyone? ;)

Dean: What is that, a monster? Is this the one you told the cops about? You know, I know what it's like to see monsters, and I know that when they're gone, they never really go away. You see 'em when you close your eyes, you see 'em in your dreams. But you know what? Me and my brother, we're the guys that stop the monsters, we're the ones that scare them. But you gotta talk to me.

Meanwhile, all Sam finds out is that there was a third friend, Mike. When they get back to the motel, he says they'll talk to him in the morning because Dean got nothing out of Shawn.
And out of the blue Sam mentions going to a strip club...The Clam Diver. What??? lol
I'm with Dean here...what the hell is going on with Sam???
Love the little bits of their lives we get here: Sam always likes to be Agent Page, Sam apparently usually complains when Dean blasts his music in the car, Dean loves chilli-fries (hello, "Tall Tales"!), and Sam's last lap dance was one Dean paid for last Christmas and then Sam spent the whole song trying to convince the girl to go to nursing school. Ah, only Sammy... *g*
So Sam is being nice to Dean because he knows Dean's not doing well and has lost faith in things. Awwww!

Dean: I'm fine.
Sam: Look, you're not, Dean. You said you don't believe in anything, and -- and that's not true, that's not you. You do believe in things, you believe in people. That's who you are, that's what you do. I know you're in a dark place and I just want to help.
Dean: Okay. Look, I've been down this road before and I fought my way back, I will fight my way back again.
Sam: How?
Dean: Same way I always do: bullets, bacon, and booze. A lot of booze.

Poor Shawn having nightmares. :(
Gah! Drilling sounds!!! Gah! Ghost Doctor is there!!!!

Eight in the morning? Sleeping in a little, Sam?
Uh, oh...Dean's bed hasn't been slept in...
Because he's passed out on the floor with a pink bra around his neck! LOL
Is that a whip in his hand? Kinky!
And Sam just leaves him there and heads out on his own. Heehee! :P

He goes to talk to Mike and can tell the kid's being evasive right away. Mike says Evan's just hiding out somewhere, it was just a prank. He finally says they went to the old Meadows Hospital because Evan dared them.

Hee! Dean with the sunglasses on and getting his bacon. *g*
Aw, I love hungover Dean! Still as cute as ever.
Sam shows him info. on the hospital...and how the doc lobotomized all the patients.
Ok, I need gifs of Dean eating bacon NOW! :D
Hell yeah you eat that dropped bit of bacon! It didn't hit the floor.
Dean points out the mask on the website that Shawn kept drawing.

So now poor Shawn is missing...from his own bedroom.
Dean feels guilty for not pushing the kid harder, could've saved him. :(
Sam says they don't know that Shawn is dead, need to check out the doc's place.

Oooh, creepy place! Dean starts calling out for Shawn right away...
Gah! Ghost Doc! He throws Sam aside and then Dean...no, not the drill!!!!!

Phew! Sam with the save, just in time! :D
The boys head upstairs...where they find the masks and Dean quickly figures out the Doc must be tied to them. Sam salts the doorway and tells Dean to burn all of them. Go, boys! Go!
Oooh, Doc blasted right through that salt by the door. Nice effects! Now that's what fire should look like!
Um...it couldn't be that easy, guys.
'Cause for one thing...Shawn took one of the masks. But the boys don't know that yet.
They can still see their breath...something's still there!!!!
They figure it's the ghosts of the Doc's patients...but they can't see them.
Dean figures there's one way...kill himself so he can get through the veil to see them, find out where the bodies are, and then come back. He's got 2 syringes, one to stop his heart and the other to restart it. He tells Sam he's got 3 minutes and Sam's all, no way, don't do this! But Dean won't be stopped. Gah! :(

Btw, this little tidbit was on SuperWiki and I wanted to include it here because it's cool and good to know:
When Dean takes out the syringes to induce death and revive him, the masking tape on the kit reads: “Dr. Robert. For Emergency.” Dr. Robert was the doctor that first induced death on Dean in 6.11 Appointment in Samarra.

Oh, a reaper...named Jessica! *g*
Yeah, Dean doesn't have time to chat with her. lol
Love Sam pouring a ring of salt around Dean's body. The touching of his chest...♥

Aw, man...Dean finds Shawn as a ghost.
So the doc possessed Shawn to get his mask back in the house and then killed the kid. So that's why there were 4 masks instead of 3 there. I thought that was weird when Dean picked that one up.
Poor kid...and Dean feels so bad about failing him.
Shawn says Evan is there too, and they can't leave.

Sam calling Dean stupid while rubbing his dead brother's chest. Awwww! ♥♥♥
Dean you've only got 30 seconds! He finally asks Shawn where his body is.
Sam injects him with the other syringe and...nothing. Dean's not waking up!!!!
Poor Sam! *cries*
Dean turns and sees...Billie!!!!! Whoah, that outfit. "We need to talk."

Billie: It's funny, to hear a Winchester talk about the finality of dying. This reality, it has rules, Dean. So many rules. And one of them? Kill one incarnation of Death, like you did, the next Reaper to die takes his place. So when Castiel stabbed me in the back turns out I got a promotion. New job, new gear.
Dean: So, you died to become Death.
Billie: This Universe can be so many things, and sometimes it is poetic. That's why we need to talk.

She takes Dean to her "Reading Room" and he wonders if she's keeping him dead and she says that depends on him. She wants to know how he's traveling between worlds.

Dean: I thought Death knew everything.
Billie: Then you can imagine how this one little blind spot is really bothering me.

Dean wants to know what's in it for him and when prompted says he wants all the ghosts to be set free, then he'll tell Billie what she wants to know. She says deal and with Reaper Jessica watching...all the ghosts in the house are released.
So Dean tells Billie about Jack, Lucifer's son, and the rip that was opened when he was born.

Dean: Why do you care?
Billie: Because I do. Because this whole multiversal, quantum construct we live in? It's like a house of cards. And the last thing I need is some big, dumb Winchester knocking it all down.
Dean: That does sound like us.
Billie: You've changed. When you bargained with me just now you could've asked to go back, to live.
Dean: Well I figured with you in charge there's no gettin' back for me.
Billie: That doesn't sound like the Dean Winchester I know and love. The man who's been dead so many times, but it never seemed to stick. Maybe you're not that guy anymore -- the guy who saves the world, the guy who always thinks he'll win no matter what. You have changed, and you tell people it's not a big deal. You tell people you'll work through it, but you know you won't, you can't, and that scares the hell out of you or am I wrong?
Dean: What do you want me to say? It doesn't matter...I don't matter.
Billie: Don't you?
Dean: I couldn't save Mom. I couldn't save Cas. I can't even save a scared little kid. Sam keeps trying to fix it, but I just keep dragging him down. So I'm not gonna beg, okay. If it's my time, it's my time.
Billie: You really believe that. You wanna die. Dean, every notebook on this particular shelf tells a version of how you die. You specifically. Heart attack, burned by a red-haired witch, stabbed by a ghoul in a graveyard, and on and on. But which one's right? That depends on you. On the choices you make.
Dean: Well I guess I made my choice.
Billie: But...unfortunately, none of these books say you die today.
Dean: Come again?
Billie: Since I got this new job, I stand witness to a much larger picture. Do you know what I see? You...and your brother. You're important.
Dean: Why?
Billie: You have work to do. It's all you need to know. And trust me, having my eyes open to the necessity of any human, especially Winchesters? Is not a thrill. So...you wanna die? But I say...keep living.
Dean: I need to know, my mom...

And he's alive! Gah!!!! Sam's relieved. You have no idea....

Looks like the authorities have dug up all the bodies at the house.
Sam wonders why the shot didn't work and Dean plays it off that it took a little while to kick in, no big deal. He got lucky. Sam wants to know what happened to all the ghosts that disappeared.
Dean explains how he met Death, Billie, and that she took care of the ghosts and that the Winchesters have work to do, whatever that means.

Sam: You okay?
Dean: No. Sam I'm not okay, I'm pretty far from okay. You know my whole life, I always believed that what we do was important. No matter what the cost, no matter who we lost. Whether it was Dad or Bobby or... and I would take the hit. But I kept on fighting because I believed that we were making the world a better place. And now Mom and Cas and I -- I don't know. I don't know.
Sam: So you don't believe anymore.
Dean: I just need a win. I just need a damn win.

Dammit, somebody give Jensen an Emmy already! *cries*
All that emotion! I can't even put it into words. He's just amazing. So much with his eyes, his voice. Beautifully done.
Love the low shot of the Impala as they get in, too.

Montage time! Impala driving, Shawn's mom seeing his body, Billie reading, the boys driving at night with Sam asleep...and Dean's phone rings. He doesn't say anything, but his face...
Gotta be Cas...
They drive up to a dark alley (I totally know this alley, too *g*), get out, and it's CAS!!!! Standing by the pay phone (seriously, how is there still a pay phone around that still works?!?) - 'cause "He'll wait right here then!" Hee! And the music: "It's never too late to start all over again..." Gah!!!! :D

Final Thoughts

What can I say? Another winner for Season 13! :D
Great acting from the boys, sweet little call-backs to older episodes, the return of Billie and Cas...what's not to love?

Just the boys doing a good old-fashioned ghost hunt. Really loved seeing just them together, working a hunt, while still dealing with their feelings. Last week we got Sam opening up and this time it's Dean's turn. There was a lot of the usual Dean tropes: not feeling his life is worth anything, failure to save an innocent and the resulting guilt, dealing with loss by drinking. Sure, it's all stuff we've seen before over the years, doesn't mean it isn't still important - after all, this is who Dean is. Of course, the nail on the head this time is that Dean's lost faith in everything since losing his mom and Cas.

So we finally get an explanation about Death being killed...and it's an acceptable one. 'Cause I guess we needed a new Death??? I mean, people were still dying anyway, even before Billie got killed. *shrugs* Whatever. It's still good to have her back. Much like Death himself, Billie's one of the few beings that can strike fear into the Winchesters.

It was so sweet seeing Sam being especially nice to Dean, doing all sorts of little favors for him. Sure, it weirded Dean out, but the reason behind it was very sweet. Goodness knows Sam has seen going-into-the-dark Dean before and he knows Dean doesn't deal with the loss of loved ones well. And then Dean's death scene...oh, my heart! All the no's, and touching/shaking Dean, and trying to bring him back. I'm kinda sorry Billie froze that scene - 'cause I'm evil like that. :P More Sammy angst!!!!!!

Nothing like seeing Dean kill himself again. So sad and tragic, even though we know it won't be permanent. Because it's the reason behind it that really gives it the emotional impact. Like in "Red Meat" it was to bring Sam back and this time it was save Shawn (because Dean needed a win). You could also say this time was a kamikaze run for Dean - he didn't intend on coming back, especially once he saw Billie. Btw, killer acting from Jensen and Lisa Berry in their scenes.

Okay, I've really said enough. Loved the ep! Glad that Cas is back and can't wait to see how their reunion plays out. 'Cause I'm eager to see what Cas this is. He knew Dean's number to call...from memory! So he must remember that much.

This episode gets an A- from me.
Bring on next week!

Quotes

Dean: What about Jack?
Sam: He's, uh, he's catching up on all my old fantasy DVDs. Red Sonja, Beastmaster, uh Beastmaster 2, you know the one with the time traveling ferrets.
Dean: How you ever got laid, I'll never know.

Sam: So, strip club?
Dean: Wait. Sorry what?
Sam: Strip... club. There's one just outside of town, the, um, Clam Diver.
Dean: You wanna go to the Clam Diver?
Sam: Yeah, it got great reviews.
Dean: You read reviews for the Clam Diver?
Sam: Yeah, it got four...

Dean: Dude, the last lap dance you had was -- was at Christmas, it was a gift paid for by me. You spent the entire song trying to convince the girl she should go to nursing school.

Dean: I'm fine.
Sam: Look, you're not, Dean. You said you don't believe in anything, and -- and that's not true, that's not you. You do believe in things, you believe in people. That's who you are, that's what you do. I know you're in a dark place and I just want to help.

Sam: How?
Dean: Same way I always do: bullets, bacon, and booze. A lot of booze.

Dean: What's up with the creepy-ass mask?
Sam: It's a plague mask. Doctors used to use them, they thought they filtered out disease. As a matter of fact, when they arrested Meadows he was wearing one and they had to hold him down to rip it off.

Dean: Look, we can't talk to them on this side of the Veil. So I'm gonna go to the other side, I'm gonna work my way through all these Caspers until we find out where this freak hid the bodies.

Dean: No, I saw Cas kill you.
Billie: How's that working out for him? It's funny to hear a Winchester talk about the finality of dying. This realty, it has rules, Dean. So many rules. And one of them: kill one incarnation of Death, like you did, the next reaper to die takes his place. So, when Castiel stabbed me in the back, turns out I got a promotion. New job. New gear.

Dean: So, you died to become Death.
Billie: This Universe can be so many things, and sometimes it is poetic. That's why we need to talk.

Dean: Lucifer's son, Jack, when he was born he created a little rip.
Billie: A little rip? Into another world and you went there?
Dean: Yeah, I'll just say it's, uh, it's not Candy Land.

Dean: Why do you care?
Billie: Because I do. Because this whole multiversal, quantum construct we live in? It's like a house of cards. And the last thing I need is some big, dumb Winchester knocking it all down.
Dean: That does sound like us.

Since when does Dean carry around a 'death-and-resurrection' kit in his duffle bag? From season 6? Really?

I thought Dean chosing to risk dying just to find the kids' bodies was weird--why not just burn down the building? Or just take time to look for them--what was the urgency? Those ghosts weren't hurting anyone...

But mostly I have a hard time with how callously Dean killed himself in front of his brother who just last week admitted how much he was torn up about Mary's death. Dean's self-sacrificing before has always been connected with saving Sam.

And Sam should have had a major meltdown afterward, again, given his feelings last week!

But at least Dean told Sam what actually happened to him...truth between them--what a concept, it's thrilling every time it happens!
