First Impressions Review: 14x12 "Prophet And Loss"

I didn't mean to let the review go this long...ah, well.

Let me begin by saying I've rewatched the opening and closing scenes of this ep multiple times. OMG They're so amazing!!! *claps* :D

That opening dream sequence with Dean in the box at the bottom of the ocean...chilling. Jensen perfectly conveying all of Dean's terror and fear and needing his brother so, so much! Clawing & kicking at the box, whimpering, trying to get himself under control, but failing, calling out for Sam, trying to use his phone, but it goes dead, plunging him into darkness. No wonder Jensen said filming this scene made him & some of the crew emotional. Thankfully, it was only a dream...but for how long?

Btw, a minor complaint...I wish they hadn't broken up the dream with the title sequence. I know why they did, but it's kind of jarring to me and breaks up the scene IMO.

Does anyone else think this is a fancier motel room than the boys usually stay in? It's pretty nice compared to most of them.

I will say the scenes of Tony murdering his victims are pretty violent. Plus we have Nick kicking that police officer in the face. Ouch! No wonder Dabb hinted at a NC-17 warning. Lots of blood for an 8 o'clock program.

More Nick...bleh. So tired of him. And he ends up escaping, wounded leg and all! Only to go back to his house (and how is that place still unlived in after all these years???) and encounters the ghost of his dead wife. Shame they couldn't get the same actress. She tries to get him to reject Satan, which of course he can't do. He's still tied to Lucifer too tightly. Ugh! Why is he still around??? I sense they're planning on Lucifer's return one way or another and I'm just so against that. I like Mark P., but his time is done on the show. I'll admit, he's acting his heart out in these scenes, but I'm so against the character and the storyline that I can't bring myself to care when he's on the screen. /rant

Let's talk about the best part of this episode, the boys!
Sam has agreed with Dean's insane plan, but that doesn't mean he has to like it, and he doesn't. It also doesn't mean that he's not going to do everything he can to talk Dean out of locking himself in that box. I cheered when Sam immediately called Cas when Dean went off to the restroom. Yay! Sam! Of course, Cas already knows the plan, but he (and Rowena) haven't been able to come up with any alternative.

Love Sam's WTH face when Dean says, "I know I wasn't always the greatest brother to you." And we finally hear Sam say that Dean pretty much raised him. I think Dean's mentioned it a couple of times now? And it's only been recently. I'm just happy that something that has been canon in the fandom for so long has finally been confirmed by the show. :) And c'mon Dean! You told Sam you didn't want a big goodbye and then you start in reminiscing when you guys were kids and poor Sam just can't handle it. But really, I did love this scene and they handled it really well.

How is Iowa "on the way" to the Pacific Ocean...from Minnesota??? Are they taking the scenic route to the West Coast?

And of course the case Sam found involves twin brothers and one of them was killed. More brotherly emotions!

Seriously! Dean losing his gun so easily like that??? No way! And how did it wind up so far away where Tony could get a hold of it to shoot himself? Gah!

Dean has 2 instances of pain or Michael fighting against the locked door in this ep. And he manages to hide them both from Sam (as far as we know). But I wonder how much worse they're going to get and if they'll start to really effect Dean. I hope they do, 'cause that would fulfill my hurt!Dean needs. *iz evil*

Donatello is back! Yay! How'd you like to wake up to Dean Winchester's face? :D
Speaking of faces...I love how expressive Jensen & Jared's faces are in this scene. Jensen's especially. His eyes! Whoah. So Donatello is still without a soul, but he should be okay now? As long as they don't let him touch one of those tablets again.

That FINAL SCENE!!!! First of all...bow-leg shot! Gotta love it! :D
Sam's already drinking...is he slightly drunk in this scene? I think so. Anyway, this scene is probably the best of the season so far and certainly one of the best of the show, ever. Jensen & Jared obliterated it! Sam struggling to convince Dean that he can't just give up like this, that he still believes in them, that they'll find another way. Dean all stoic and holding on until Sam punches him and collapses into that hug and Dean finally gives in and says, "Let's go home.". Little brother finally got through. So beautiful, so emotional! But Dean won't totally let this plan go. He makes Sam promise that if they don't find an alternate plan, that he will put Dean in that box. Btw, I love how Dean's voice breaks when says the word promise. "And you have to promise me that you'll do then what you can't do now, and that's let me go. And put me in that box." Sam says yes, but Cas doesn't. Love that final little gesture of Dean cupping the side of the Sam's cheek! And telling him not to hit him again. Hee! Beautiful stuff! And the fandom is left in a blubbering mess!

Note that Dean says that maybe Billie is wrong. This could be the solution!
After all, the first Death was wrong in Season 10 when he told Dean that he had to kill Sam because Sam would try anything to keep Dean alive with the MOC. I mean, the big fear was letting the Darkness out. It would destroy the world, right? Well, Dean killed Death instead of Sam, the MOC was removed, unleashing the Darkness. And you know what? The boys figured it all out. God and the world was on the brink of death, but Dean helped God & his sister talk things out and it all ended peacefully! So there IS always another way. Doom and gloom predictions be damned!

What another amazing episode! Whoah. Where was all of this at the beginning of the season?
I feel it'll be a huge letdown when we have another mediocre episode again. Not that SPN has a lot of mediocre eps, but you know what I mean. We've had 3 epic episodes in a row...and the next one is supposed to be more of the same. I don't want this fabulous ride to end!!! :D

Sam: You know, Dean, you don't have to act like what you're planning to do is business as usual. I-I know you're scared.
Dean: Never said I wasn't scared. But it doesn't matter.
Sam: Doesn't matter? Dean, we know we could die, uh, doing what we do. It's always a possibility. But what you're talking about is far worse than death. Michael's an archangel. He could literally keep you buried, in a coffin, alive forever.

Castiel: I-I did as you asked. I've -- I've looked for any possible way to forcibly extract Michael and destroy him. But so far, nothing.
Sam: And what about Rowena?
Castiel: She went through the entire Book of the Damned and found nothing. And I told her to do it again, see if she missed something, and, uh... well, the woman has a remarkable command of profanity.

Dean: I know I wasn't always the greatest brother to you.
Sam: Dean, you were the one who was always there for me. The only one. I mean, you practically raised me.
Dean: I know things got dicey... you know, with Dad... the way he was. And I just... I didn't always look out for you the way I should've. I mean, I had my own stuff, you know. In order to keep the peace, probably looked like I took his side quite a bit. Sometimes, when I was... when I was away, you know it wasn't 'cause I just ran out, right? Dad would... He would send me away when I really pissed him off. I think you knew that.
Sam: Man, I left that behind a long time ago. I had to. And if we're gonna get through this, I-I have to do like you said and... try and keep my mind off where we're going. So if we could not have conversations that sound like... deathbed apologies, I would really appreciate it.

Castiel: The natural order's been upset. Perhaps Donatello's state has created a prophet who's not only premature... but malformed.
Sam: Okay. But if Tony was wired wrong because of Donatello, then the next prophet will be wired wrong, as well, and then the next, and the next and the -- the next and... How do we end this?
Dean: You know how.

Sarah: My unfinished business isn't just about how I died, Nick. It's you. I was here that night. I saw what he did to you. I... You chose Lucifer. You wanted him. You... You still do.
Nick: He chose me, okay.
Sarah: You didn't come here to find peace. You came here to find him in the place you became one with him.
Nick: No.
Sarah: Then show me I'm wrong. Reject Lucifer right now. If you do, I can leave. I can find peace. Reject him, Nick. Please. Please!
Nick: I-I can't. I'm sorry.
Sarah: You can't. Because you are him. You doomed me to stay in this place forever. You've doomed yourself.

Dean: Cas... if you were a friend of mine, then you will understand that I have to do this and you won't try to stop me. You think this is easy on me? It has to be done.

Castiel: Donatello's mind is fighting to rebuild. It's -- It's like he's trying to organize his his memories, the words of God.
Dean: So that's what Tony was picking up on.
Castiel: Well, then, I-I can fix him.
Dean: Wait. How? I thought he was too far gone.
Castiel: Dean, if there's a spark -- a hope -- then I have to try. You taught me that.

Dean: He is back, isn't he? I mean, this isn't some kind of evil, weird version?
Castiel: No. This is the -- the regular him. But, um... he -- he -- he doesn't have a soul.
Dean: Hm. Well, nobody's perfect.

Dean: Well, I would call this a win. Kind of nice. We're going out on a high.
Sam: 'Going out' being the operative phrase.
Dean: Sorry.
Sam: 'Sorry.' How sorry are you? Sorry that you fight to keep Donatello alive, but when it comes to you, you just throw in the towel? Or are you sorry that, after all these years, our entire lives, z-after I've looked up to you, after I've learned from you. I-I-I've copied you, I followed you to Hell and back, are you sorry that all of that -- it -- it -- it means nothing now?
Dean: Who's saying that?
Sam: You are, when you tell me I have to kill you. When you're telling me I have to throw away everything we stand for, throw away faith, throw away family. We're the guys that save the world. We don't just check out of it!
Dean: Sam, I have tried everything. Everything! I got one card left to pay, and I have to play it.
Sam: You have one card today! But we'll find another tomorrow. But if you quit on us today, there won't be no tomorrow! You tell me, uh, you don't know what else to do. I don't either, Dean. Not yet. But what you're doing now, i-it's -- it's wrong! It's quitting! I mean l-look what just happened. Donatello never quit fighting. So we could help him because he never gave up. I believe in us, Dean. I believe in us. Why don't you believe in us, too?
Dean: Okay, Sam. Let's go home.
Sam: What?
Dean: Let's go home. Maybe Billie's wrong. Maybe. But I do believe in us. I believe in all of us. And I'll keep believing until I can't. Until there is absolutely no other way. But when that day comes -- if that day comes... Sam, you have to take it for what it is -- the end. And you have to promise me that you'll do then what you can't do now, and that's let me go. And put me in that box. You, too.
Sam: Yeah, alright. Alright. Alright.
